{"id":61654,"date":"2026-04-03T19:38:42","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T19:38:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/03\/veteran-rb-funk-and-rock-drummer-james-gadson-dead-at-86\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T19:38:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T19:38:42","slug":"veteran-rb-funk-and-rock-drummer-james-gadson-dead-at-86","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/03\/veteran-rb-funk-and-rock-drummer-james-gadson-dead-at-86\/","title":{"rendered":"Veteran R&#038;B, Funk and Rock Drummer James Gadson Dead at 86"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>James Gadson \u2014 the veteran R&amp;B, soul, funk and rock drummer who played with <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/bill-withers\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Withers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/marvin-gaye\" target=\"_blank\">Marvin Gaye<\/a>, Diana Ross, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/paul-mccartney\" target=\"_blank\">Paul McCartney<\/a> and many others \u2014 has died at the age of 86.<\/p>\n<p>Gadson&#8217;s wife, Barbara, confirmed the news to\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/james-gadson-drummer-obituary-1235541434\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/em> and told the\u00a0magazine that he&#8217;d\u00a0recently undergone surgery and suffered a nasty fall that hurt his back.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was a wonderful man,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He was a great husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and one hell of a drummer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/best-70s-soul-albums\/\" target=\"_blank\">Top 25 Soul Albums of the &#8217;70s<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>James Gadson&#8217;s Life and Career<\/h3>\n<p>Born on June 17, 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri, Gadson made a name for himself in the late &#8217;60s playing with Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, with whom he recorded the Top 5 R&amp;B hit &#8220;Express Yourself&#8221; in 1970. He went on to play on Withers&#8217; classic 1972 album\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/bill-withers-still-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">Still Bill<\/a><\/em> (featuring the No. 1 hit &#8220;Lean on Me&#8221;), as well as Gaye&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/marvin-gaye-i-want-you\/\" target=\"_blank\">I Want You<\/a><\/em> and Ross&#8217; disco smash &#8220;Love Hangover.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the &#8217;70s, Gadson\u00a0played with a myriad of other artists including Freddie King, Martha Reeves, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Herbie Hancock, B.B. King, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/aretha-franklin\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aretha Franklin<\/a>, Albert King and more. He contributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/donald-fagen\/\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Fagen<\/a>&#8216;s 1982 solo\u00a0debut\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/donald-fagen-the-nightfly-album\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Nightfly<\/a><\/em>, and in the 2000s he delved more into rock and pop, playing on McCartney&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/paul-mccartney-chaos-and-creation-in-the-backyard\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chaos and Creation in the Backyard<\/a><\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/justin-timberlake\/\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Timberlake<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>FutureSex\/LoveSounds<\/em> and a trio of <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/beck\" target=\"_blank\">Beck<\/a> albums:\u00a0<i>Sea Change<\/i>,\u00a0<em>The Information<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Morning Phase<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>James Gadson&#8217;s Advice for Improving the Groove<\/h3>\n<p>As one of the most-recorded drummers in R&amp;B history, Gadson picked up plenty of tips and tricks along the way. His advice for other drummers trying to improve their groove was simple: <em>slow down<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Understand what it is, and simplify,&#8221; he told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moderndrummer.com\/2007\/07\/james-gadson-interview-namm\/\" target=\"_blank\">Modern Drummer<\/a><\/em> in 2007. &#8220;Most grooves,\u00a0<em>especially<\/em>\u00a0for dance music, are very simple. Even so, to learn them, you have to slow them down. A lot of times we do all these rudimental things to see how fast we can play. I think you have to slow it all down and simplify it.
