\n\tDavid Lowery\u2019s upcoming film Mother Mary<\/em> <\/a>stars Anne Hathaway<\/a> as the titular character, a tormented pop star seeking the help of a scorned friend, played by Michaela Coel, amid a grand comeback concert.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen speaking with Empire<\/a><\/em>, the director shared how he drew inspiration from Taylor Swift<\/a>\u2018s 2018 Reputation<\/em> tour and concert film <\/a>when shaping both the character\u2019s performances and identify. \u201cHer Reputation<\/em> concert film is one of the best concert films ever,\u201d Lowery said. \u201cIt\u2019s truly phenomenal. And for our concert sequences we looked at that repeatedly,\u201d he told the publication. \u201cYou would not believe the amount of time we were talking about Taylor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn theaters April 17,\u00a0Mother Mary\u00a0<\/em>also stars\u00a0Hunter Schafer<\/a>, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barb\u00e9-Brown, Sian Clifford, and\u00a0FKA Twigs.<\/a>\u00a0The pop star backdrop of the film will be soundtracked by original music from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and Twigs.<\/p>\n

\n\tLowery also said that Reputation<\/em> served as a template for certain scenes when it came to budgeting. \u201cWe took three songs from\u00a0Reputation<\/em>\u00a0and broke it down, shot by shot, and looked at them like, \u2018Okay, if we were doing these, how much would these shots cost to do in visual effects?\u2019,\u201d he said. \u201cWe used that as a budgeting tool, because we didn\u2019t know how to wrap our heads around actually pulling off a stadium concert-show on a minimal budget. We were literally using\u00a0Reputation<\/em>\u00a0as a guide.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSwift\u2019s impact on the project left such a mark that when Mother Mary <\/em>wrapped, Hathaway gifted Lowery a \u201cTaylor Swift style beaded bracelet\u201d with \u201cAnti-Hero\u201d on it, a nod to Swift\u2019s massive 2022 hit from her 10th studio album,\u00a0Midnights<\/em>. Lowery added that both he and Hathaway attended her Eras Tour in Europe. \u201cI definitely brought a lot of Taylor Swift to the table in terms of who Mother Mary was,\u201d he said. \u201cI would often would be like, \u2018Imagine Taylor Swift in 10 or 15 years \u2013 that\u2019s sort of who this character could be.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
