Cislo says in a statement to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cApollonia is very happy that the parties can continue to honor the legacy of Prince and his musical genius. In a time of so much conflict, it is very good to see people coming together to resolve their dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tApollonia, whose legal name is Patricia Kotero, alleged in her August lawsuit that estate representatives were \u201cattempting to steal\u201d her name. She claimed it was \u201chighly likely\u201d the estate would sue her for trademark infringement unless she obtained a judicial declaration confirming her rights to the name and related marks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn her filings, Kotero said Prince never sought to trademark the name before his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/musics-fentanyl-crisis-inside-the-drug-that-killed-prince-and-tom-petty-666019\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/musics-fentanyl-crisis-inside-the-drug-that-killed-prince-and-tom-petty-666019\/\">accidental fentanyl overdose<\/a> in April 2016 at age 57. She argued it was therefore improper for the estate to assume control of the Apollonia trademark last June and to seek cancellation of her other registrations and applications in a proceeding before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a statement posted on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DNohsjLPX4Q\">official Prince Instagram account<\/a>, the estate said it had a duty to \u201cprotect and preserve Prince\u2019s assets and legacy,\u201d while expressing a desire to work amicably with Kotero. The estate said it had repeatedly tried to resolve the dispute privately and had offered her opportunities to perform at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/paisley-park\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paisley-park\" data-tag=\"paisley-park\">Paisley Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLawyers for the estate did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. She cited promotional material featuring another actress labeled \u201cApollonia,\u201d which she said violated her right of publicity. The estate countered that using the name of a character from the film did not support a legal claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tKotero rose to fame in <em>Purple Rain<\/em> and later toured internationally.
