\n\tOne thing that is great about music is its ability to uplift, even when \u2014 especially when \u2014 shit is bleak. Renaissance man David Byrne<\/a> doesn\u2019t shy away from the bad in the world; in fact, his songs often meditate on life\u2019s complexities and the conflicting emotions they bring. \u00a0At Coachella<\/a>, he and his untethered musicians and dancers marked those highs and lows not to avoid or escape it, but in reveling in our shared humanity \u2014 flaws and all \u2014 find some hope.<\/p>\n \n\tAfter a bit of a late start, Byrne and Co. transported those in the Outdoor Theatre out of the desert and into an immersive, theatrical world where a whole lot of dancing, hope, and common ground amid life\u2019s uncertainties were found. His recent concert runs are an elaborate, perfectly choreographed experience, as those who might\u2019ve caught his first time at Coachella in 2018 or any of his tour run at the time in support of American Utopia<\/a><\/em> know.<\/p>\n \n\tThis time around was just as spectacular. The musician appeared solo at first in an orange jumpsuit, before kicking things off with \u201cEverybody Laughs\u201d from his latest album, Who Is the Sky?<\/a><\/em> as his bandmates joined him onstage. They also performed \u201cWhen We Are Singing\u201d and \u201cWhat Is the Reason for It?\u201d from his recent LP, and his collaboration with Brian Eno \u201cStrange Overtones,\u201d but the set leaned heavily on Talking Heads classics, including \u201cAnd She Was,\u201d \u201cThis Must Be the Place,\u201d and \u201cPsycho Killer,\u201d to the delight of the audience who sang along to every word.<\/p>\n \n\tBefore launching into \u201cWhat Is the Reason for It?\u201d, which contemplates the meaning of love, he shared a story from actor-director John Cameron Mitchell, who told him, \u201cLove and kindness are the most punk thing we can do right now.\u201d He said at the time, he didn\u2019t get right away, but that now he understood it. \u201cLove and kindness are a form of resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n
