{"id":62475,"date":"2026-04-14T22:17:28","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T22:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/14\/senators-ask-judge-to-examine-surprise-deal\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T22:17:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T22:17:28","slug":"senators-ask-judge-to-examine-surprise-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/14\/senators-ask-judge-to-examine-surprise-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Senators Ask Judge to Examine Surprise Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSenators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/amy-klobuchar\/\" id=\"auto-tag_amy-klobuchar\" data-tag=\"amy-klobuchar\">Amy Klobuchar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/elizabeth-warren\/\" id=\"auto-tag_elizabeth-warren\" data-tag=\"elizabeth-warren\">Elizabeth Warren<\/a>, and Corey Booker are calling on the Southern District of New York to \u201cclosely scrutinize\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/live-nation-ticketmaster-settle-antitrust-lawsuit-1235527155\/\">Live Nation\u2019s surprise settlement<\/a> with the Department of Justice following reports that the deal may have been shaped by outside political influence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a letter filed to Judge Arun Subramanian on Tuesday, April 14, the senators stated, \u201cThe facts surrounding the settlement also point toward a deal made in response to political pressure rather than the public interest.\u201d They asked the court to examine the deal and potentially \u201creject the settlement if it is not in the public interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAlong with Klobuchar, Warren, and Booker, the letter was signed by Senators Richard Blumenthal, Mazie Hirono, and Peter Welch. \u201cFans, artists, and independent venues have suffered for too long under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/live-nation\/\" id=\"auto-tag_live-nation\" data-tag=\"live-nation\">Live Nation<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ticketmaster\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ticketmaster\" data-tag=\"ticketmaster\">Ticketmaster<\/a>\u2019s monopoly control of live events,\u201d the senators wrote. \u201cThe recent settlement between Live Nation-Ticketmaster and the Justice Department fails to address these fundamental issues and stops far short of prying open this industry to new competition, innovation, and choice for consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tReps for Live Nation did not immediately return <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s request for comment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLive Nation abruptly settled with the Department of Justice in early March, just one week into the highly anticipated trial. The government\u2019s deal was signed by seven of the co-plaintiff states that had signed onto the original suit, but more than 30 state attorneys general, plus Washington D.C., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/live-nation-trial-resume-states-leading-doj-settlement-1235530222\/\">moved forward with the case<\/a>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/live-nation-trial-closing-arguments-1235543669\/\">Closing arguments<\/a> in the trial took place last Thursday while jury deliberations remain ongoing.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile the proposed settlement included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/live-nation-settlement-need-to-know-next-1235528047\/\">monetary damages and concessions<\/a> involving ticketing and Live Nation\u2019s amphitheater business, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/amy-klobuchar-live-nation-settlement-reaction-1235527586\/\">many critics said<\/a> it did not go far enough in tackling the company\u2019s dominance in the live-entertainment industry. The Senators, in their new letter, reiterated those concerns, along with others about how the deal was struck.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cCongress enacted the antitrust laws to protect against increased prices, reduced opportunity, and stifled innovation that occurs when dominant firms abuse their market position,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cThe proposed settlement terms, negotiated under suspicious circumstances, do not include the kinds of remedies that consumers and small businesses deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThese allegedly \u201csuspicious circumstances,\u201d the letter details, center on the ouster of several top officials in the Justice Department\u2019s antitrust division \u2014 including its former head Gail Slater and one of her deputies, Roger Alford \u2014 as well as the lobbying efforts of Mike Davis, a MAGA influencer and lawyer reportedly hired by Live Nation. For instance, the letter cites a talk Alford gave last August, not long after he was fired, in which he said Live Nation and Ticketmaster had \u201cpaid a bevy of cozy MAGA friends to roam the halls of the [Antitrust Division] in defense of their monopoly abuses.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe letter goes on to mention a recent <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/us-news\/law\/lobbyists-antitrust-trump-davis-f6a02e04\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> report that indicated President Donald Trump intervened in discussions preceding the Live Nation settlement. After hearing about the case from several prominent people, Trump started to ask what was holding up a deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn March 5, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/live-nation-ceo-michael-rapino-testifies-antitrust-trial-1235534454\/\">Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino<\/a>, the company\u2019s lawyers, and DOJ officials (including former Attorney General Pam Bondi) reportedly met at the White House and struck a deal that was signed that day.
