Stopgap cash grab by the record company or the result of artist indulgence that can’t be contained within the usual confines of a single LP? The double album has been both throughout its long and inflated history.<\/p>\n
As the list below of the Top\u00a035 Double Albums, chosen\u00a0by UCR’s staff, shows, two LPs are regularly better than one, particularly when it comes to the most legendary artists. (The Beatles<\/a>, the Clash<\/a>, Bob Dylan<\/a>, Jimi Hendrix<\/a>, the Rolling Stones<\/a> and the Who<\/a> arguably were never better than on their double albums.)<\/p>\n Many of the greatest records in rock and pop history are double albums. This is often because of their nature\u00a0\u2014 creative\u00a0outpouring can lead to new ideas being explored in innovative ways\u00a0\u2014 and other times, they’ve arrived at the peak of an artist’s career.\u00a0So, given the freedom and opportunity to expand\u00a0the playing time of their music, artists\u00a0leap at the chance.<\/p>\n
