If he\u2019s creating new music, the East Texas native is at ease. \u201cSongwriting is a great form of therapy for someone who has trouble dealing with things, and I\u2019ve had that problem in the past,\u201d Emerson says. Now, in a career that\u2019s pushing a decade, he\u2019s finding his words are coming easier than they ever have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn Friday, he illustrates what he\u2019s talking about with the release of <em>Blue Stars<\/em>, his fourth studio album and first since 2023\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/vincent-neil-emerson-golden-crystal-kingdom-choctaw-apache-1234894159\/\">The Golden Crystal Kingdom<\/a><\/em>, via the independent label La Honda Records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI wrote pretty much all these songs within the span of a couple of weeks. I write once in a while, but maybe once a year, I\u2019ll sit down and have a creative spurt and write hard for a few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe 12-track <em>Blue Stars<\/em> represents Emerson\u2019s most complete project to date. It\u2019s the first of his four LPs that features his touring outfit, the Red Horse Band. Recorded in Nashville at Gnome Studios and produced by Patrick Lyons, the record is heavy on the swinging twang that has become a signature in Emerson\u2019s live shows. Across the record, he laments love, his upbringing in East Texas and Louisiana, and his Native roots in the Choctaw-Apache tribe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe also pushes his melodies and music across the record. He and Lyons brought in horns for \u201cLouisiana Wind.\u201d Over swampy percussion and keys, Emerson sings about partying in New Orleans, \u201cdancing with my two left feet,\u201d and how \u201cthe devil always needs another friend.\u201d He explains that the title of the song is referencing being overserved. If you\u2019re drunk in the French Quarter, and you\u2019re swaying, he says, it looks like you are being blown around in the breeze.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been going to New Orleans since I was a kid,\u201d Emerson says, \u201cto go party or hang out or kind of see all there is to see. Louisiana, for me, those are my ancestral lands. Despite, at 33, being nearly 40 years younger than Earle, the two played off each other throughout the set. The show happened against the backdrop of the immigration crackdowns in Minneapolis and across the U.S., and at one point, Emerson told the crowd, \u201cYou can\u2019t be an immigrant on stolen land,\u201d which resulted in a standing ovation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt also endeared him further to Earle. The first time he played a new song for Earle, the venerable songwriter name-dropped one of his late friends in response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHe said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/guy-clark-12-essential-songs-67139\/\">Guy Clark<\/a> told him he only had two critiques when you showed him a new song,\u201d Emerson says. \u201cHe either said, \u2018Needs work,\u2019 or \u2018Good work.\u2019 Steve says that, and then he turns to me and goes, \u2018Good work.\u2019 My heart just kind of fucking sunk. This is one of my heroes telling me that. It meant a lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSuch interactions have become common for Emerson as he geared up for the <em>Blue Stars<\/em> release, which he\u2019ll officially celebrate by making his Grand Ole Opry debut on Friday. His invitation to play the Opry for the first time came courtesy of William Prince, the Canadian folk singer who joined Emerson earlier this year as an opener on a tour of the southeast.
