Alan Osmond, the oldest member of singing group The Osmonds, died on Monday (April 20), according to a spokesperson for the family. He was 76 years old.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson confirmed that Osmond died at about 8:30PM on Monday night with his wife, Suzanne Pinegar, and children by his side, according to Salt Lake City, Utah’s ABC4<\/a>.<\/p>\n His brother Donny Osmond shared an early childhood photo of himself with Alan as part of a touching tribute post.<\/p>\n In his tribute, Donny described Alan as “My protector. My guide. The one who quietly carried so much responsibility so the rest of us could shine.”<\/p>\n “I owe him more than I can ever fully express,” Donny continued. “I love you, Alan. Thank you for always being there for me.”<\/p>\n Osmond’s brother and band mate Merrill Osmond also shared the news in a Facebook post, where he offered words of comfort and faith to those grieving the singer’s death.<\/p>\n In his post, Merrill said that Alan’s presence is still palpable in the family.<\/p>\n “I need you to know this…he has not left me. I have felt him. I have felt his quiet encouragement telling me to keep going,” Merrill wrote.<\/p>\n “…So please, don’t let your hearts be heavy. Don’t weep for him. Rejoice, knowing that your brother, your friend, your hero is no longer in pain. He is free. He is whole. He is home.”<\/p>\n Alan Osmond was born on June 22, 1949, in Ogden, Utah.<\/p>\n He and three of his younger brothers \u2014 Wayne, Merrill and Jay \u2014 formed a barbershop quartet in the late 1950s. They shot to fame with regular appearances on The Andy Williams Show <\/i>in the ’60s,\u00a0<\/i>and Donny Osmond joined the group in 1963 at just five years old.\u00a0He’d later become the breakout star.<\/p>\n The group performed on a variety of stages throughout its career.<\/p>\n Alan was the group’s leader much of the time, as he was the oldest, and he and Merrill co-wrote several of their songs.\u00a0Alan also worked on several different TV shows, including\u00a0Donny and Marie<\/em> and The Osmond Family Show<\/i>, per\u00a0IMDB.<\/p>\n In his tribute, Donny said that Alan was “our leader in every sense of the word.”<\/p>\n READ MORE<\/em>: Remember When the Osmond Brothers Played Their Final Show?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n “His tireless work helped build everything we became,” he continued. “I will always be grateful for the sacrifices he made and the love he showed \u2014 not just to me, but to every member of our family.”<\/p>\n Donny started pursuing a solo career in the early ’70s and by 1976, he was focused on other projects outside the Osmonds, such as\u00a0Donny and Marie<\/em> with sister Marie Osmond.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the\u00a0remaining band mates continued to perform in multiple different genres, with a focus on country music beginning around 1982. They notched hits like “I Think About Your Lovin'” in the genre.<\/p>\n 6ABC<\/a><\/i>\u00a0reports that Alan retired from performing around 1987 after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
