{"id":63042,"date":"2026-04-22T13:14:30","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T13:14:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/22\/patti-smith-guitarist-lenny-kaye-makes-his-solo-debut\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T13:14:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T13:14:30","slug":"patti-smith-guitarist-lenny-kaye-makes-his-solo-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/22\/patti-smith-guitarist-lenny-kaye-makes-his-solo-debut\/","title":{"rendered":"Patti Smith Guitarist Lenny Kaye Makes His Solo Debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAfter 55 years of collaboration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lenny-kaye\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lenny-kaye\" data-tag=\"lenny-kaye\">Lenny Kaye<\/a> still managed to surprise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/patti-smith\/\" id=\"auto-tag_patti-smith\" data-tag=\"patti-smith\">Patti Smith<\/a> when he played her his new album, <em>Goin\u2019 Local<\/em>, due July 29.\u00a0 \u201cI never heard you sound like this,\u201d she told him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe album marks Kaye\u2019s belated official debut as a solo artist at age 79, following a wildly diverse career \u2014\u00a0 in addition to his decades-long gig as Smith\u2019s guitarist and key collaborator, he\u2019s written numerous books, produced artists from Suzanne Vega to Soul Asylum, and compiled the legendary garage-rock boxed set <em>Nuggets<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve always written songs,\u201d Kaye says. \u201cSometimes they\u2019re very personal. Sometimes I do them for my own amusement. The timing? As Orson Welles said, there is no wine before its time. I can really sometimes only concentrate on one side of my personality at a time. And of course, with the writing of the books and the work with Patti and all the other things that I do, it always seems that I was the last person to move to the priority list.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lenny Kaye  - Goin&#039; Local (Lyric Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FCOY5yAN2O8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSmith probably won\u2019t be the only listener surprised by the album, which combines some downtown rock with gentle, playful story-songs that swerve towards an almost Buddy Holly-ish melodic sweetness. There\u2019s also a lovely Smith co-write, the poppy, mid-tempo \u201cSolstice.\u201d \u201cSome of the stuff is very emotional and tender in a way that sometimes people might not think of me,\u201d says Kaye. \u201cI\u2019m known for garage rock, quote unquote, which I always celebrate and honor. But that was the music I made when I was a teenager. I\u2019ve certainly grown past that in many ways.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe touchstones for the album\u2019s softer material, Kaye says, include Townes Van Zandt, Eric Andersen, Kevin Kinney of Drivin\u2019 N Cryin\u2019, and Alejandro Escovedo. He was also affected by his Eighties work producing another singer-songwriter. \u201cWorking with Suzanne Vega,\u201d he says, \u201ctaught me the beauty of the acoustic guitar, the simple intimacy of picking with your fingers and allowing the song to emerge.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe solo-debut designation does come out with an asterisk, since Kaye released the harder-hitting<em> I\u2019ve Got A Righ<\/em>t, under the band name Lenny Kaye Connection, in 1984, during the time Smith took off from music. \u201cThat was kind of a band,\u201d Kaye says.\u201dSince that\u2019s 40 years in the past, I guess this is my solo debut for this millennium\u2026. I do feel like a new artist\u2026 Whatever I did in the past, especially in the band world, was a different era for me. I feel like I\u2019m moving into the future, which is a great blessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSix of the album\u2019s tracks began in abortive sessions in the 2010s with Patti Smith Group bassist Tony Shanahan.\u00a0 Two years ago, Kaye started going into a studio near his Pennsylvania home to finish what he\u2019d begun and add new material.\u00a0 \u201cSome of the songs go back 15 years, 20 years,\u201d Kaye says. \u201cSometimes I confront a younger version of myself. I think the title song, \u2018Goin\u2019 Local,\u2019 is when I was a bit more of a wild animal on the Lower East Side than I am now.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAmong the most moving tracks on the album is the collector\u2019s lament \u201cThe Things You Leave Behind.\u201d \u201cI go down to my basement and I see mounds of great stuff,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s really hard. Look at that piece of memorabilia, or here\u2019s some sheet music I got sometime. And then I go upstairs and there\u2019s the guitar room with great guitars and amplifiers. Of course all the books\u2026. That song was sparked by two or three or four people who suddenly leave this world \u2014 and what happens to this stuff? That\u2019s what my daughter asks me all the time: \u2018Dad, better get it out of the house.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe album\u2019s final track, \u201cYes I Will,\u201d has lyrics written by Kaye\u2019s uncle, the late Larry Kusic,\u00a0 a successful Hollywood songwriter whose credits included \u201cSpeak Softly Love,\u201d the English-language love theme from <em>The Godfather<\/em>, and \u201cA Time for Us,\u201d the love theme from the 1968 film of Romeo and Juliet. It\u2019s not their first collaboration.
