He earned a four-chair turn during the Blind Auditions with a performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Look To You,” which he sang in honor of his late mother.<\/p>\n Carter was a stand-out contestant for McEntire from the start. She was moved to tears by his audition performance.<\/p>\n “I love those songs, when you can take it spiritual or secular, either one. So much emotion, and I saw it and I felt it and I heard it when you were singing,” she said during the taping, according to\u00a0E! News<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n McEntire acknowledged that the performance had stirred up an emotional response in her, and pointed out, “That’s when you know you’ve got a great song and a great singer, when it touches your heart.”<\/p>\n The audition song that Carter and McEntire first bonded over on\u00a0The Voice<\/em> was already a deeply significant one for the young singer. He’d first performed it at his mother’s funeral.<\/p>\n After his audition, Carter had his pick of\u00a0The Voice<\/em> coaches. But his instinct told him to pick McEntire, according to\u00a0USA Today<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n “Something told me to go with Reba.
