They Meant Well"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThis was a historic night on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/american-idol\/\" id=\"auto-tag_american-idol\" data-tag=\"american-idol\">American Idol<\/a><\/em>: the show\u2019s first-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/taylor-swift\/\" id=\"auto-tag_taylor-swift\" data-tag=\"taylor-swift\">Taylor Swift<\/a> Night. Contestants have attempted her tunes before, but<em> Idol <\/em>had never set aside a night to showcase her songbook, which might seem like a surprise. \u201cWe\u2019re making history tonight, with our musical celebration of the icon Taylor Swift!\u201d Ryan Seacrest announced at the beginning. \u201cGet ready to shake it off live!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFor the role of guest judge, they got one of the funniest Swifties around: comedy queen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-features\/nikki-glaser-comedy-golden-globes-interview-1235197707\/'\">Nikki Glaser<\/a>, who sashayed onstage singing along to \u201cOpalite.\u201d \u201cI went to 22 Eras Tour concerts,\u201d she announced. \u201cI don\u2019t have a family and I had the money!\u201d Her goal for the evening: \u201cI\u2019m looking to feel something.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut it wasn\u2019t that kind of night. <em>Idol<\/em> just didn\u2019t really seem up to the occasion. The contestants struggled mighty hard with the songs. Taylor did not show up, which was a shrewd move. (She\u2019s appeared on <em>The Voice<\/em> twice, but never <em>Idol<\/em>.) A gaggle of her Eras dancers were in the house, according to Glaser\u2019s social media, but not so\u2019s you could spot them onscreen. The whole night was obviously scripted as a big event, yet never quite got started. This celebration could have been an email.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSeacrest promised, \u201cWe\u2019ve got a show tonight that\u2019s out of every Swiftie\u2019s wildest dreams!\u201d\u00a0 But bizarrely, they ran out of Swift songs halfway through, and with no warning, abandoned the Taylor theme without a fare-thee-well, not even a goodbye in a getaway car. The second half of Taylor Swift Night became a tribute to the state of California, sponsored by the state\u2019s tourism bureau. (Not even the Taylor songs about California!) It was a little weird.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tChances are that like many of your fellow citizens, you might have slacked off in your duty to keep up with <em>American Idol<\/em> in recent years. So here\u2019s a cheat sheet: The judges are Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan. Their directive is 100 percent positivity \u2014  pure Paula Abdul energy, without a grain of Simon salt in any of their shakers. (Carrie learned her lesson earlier this season when she got booed for dishing out some tough love.) They don\u2019t do coaching or pro tips, just a dazed stream of \u201camazing\u201d and \u201cI love you\u201d and \u201cI love how amazing it is to love you.\u201d It\u2019s like<em> Project Hail Mary<\/em> if the only human language Rocky learned was \u201cwords of encouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt was bizarre to see Nikki Glaser, an expert cutthroat artist who hosts the Golden Globes, thrown into the deep end of the positivity pool. \u201cI\u2019m used to roasting,\u201d she confessed to Seacrest. \u201cI turned that part of my brain off tonight.\u201d When Glaser told contestant Braden Rumfelt that his version of \u201cCardigan\u201d was \u201cin the pocket\u201d he replied, \u201cLike Tom Brady?\u201d It seemed like a clever reference to Nikki\u2019s career-making shade at Brady\u2019s Comedy Central Roast in 2024, where she stole the show. (\u201cIt\u2019s hard to walk away from something that isn\u2019t your pregnant girlfriend!\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut for most of the night, Glaser seemed to be the only person in the room who knew any of these songs. Seacrest eventually came out in his <em>Folklore <\/em>cardigan, declaring, \u201cI am a Swiftie!\u201d But the human element came from seeing the singers\u2019 total disconnection from the material. Nobody did any testimonials where they walk in the sunset and muse about what the songs mean to them. Only one of the singers revealed listening to Swift on their own time \u2014 Chris Tungseth, a lovably hirsute country boy in the Bo Bice\/Sundance Head mode. Back in his high-school football days, as a middle linebacker, he used to hype up before games by blasting \u201cBlank Space\u201d in the locker room.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBrooks Rooser sang \u201cLove Story,\u201d for his fellow contestant Rae Boyd \u2014 they just revealed last week that they\u2019re a couple. But America, you are one cold and cruel little nation. I mean, <em>Idol <\/em>gives you a real-life love story? He sings her the Romeo\/Juliet song? And you respond by immediately <em>voting him off the show<\/em>? Heartless! (Rae got cut a couple weeks ago for singing \u201cMacArthur Park,\u201d so insert your own cake\/rain metaphor here.) Hold on tight, you two. The singers weren\u2019t well-prepared, to say the least. A few were gasping for breath, like Jordan McCullough in \u201cTim McGraw\u201d or Daniel Stallworth in \u201cFearless.\u201d Hannah Harper busted out her bluegrass banjo for \u201cMean,\u201d astutely meeting the song on its own terms. Chris, the \u201cBlank Space\u201d bro, tackled \u201cExile,\u201d or as Seacrest calls it, \u201cthe Grammy-nominated indie-folk ballad \u2018Exile.\u2019\u201d But it was comically poignant to see the judges struggle to keep cranking out the nonstop glaze. After Keyla Robinson fumbled \u201cLover,\u201d missing note after note, Underwood bravely praised \u201cyour melodic choices,\u201d which was one way to put it. \u201cI don\u2019t even recognize that song!\u201d Glaser raved, meaning it as a compliment. \u201cYou brought something new to it I couldn\u2019t even imagine could be brought to it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGlaser, no doubt like many viewers, seemed a little baffled when the Swift songs dried up, and <em>Idol<\/em> had to pad out the rest of the episode with songs themed around California. Brooks serenaded his lady with a Maroon 5 oldie, explaining, \u201cI\u2019m in love, Ryan!\u201d Braden sang <em>another<\/em> Maroon 5 hit, explaining, \u201cThis song is my chance to just have fun.\u201d Dude, you\u2019re 23 and your idea of fun is Maroon 5? Demand a little more out of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt turned into one of those grim <em>Idol <\/em>nights where everyone seems to give up trying, until you wonder \u201cJeez, what\u2019s next, somebody gonna sing \u2018I Can\u2019t Make You Love Me\u2019 again?\u2019\u201d Tonight it was poor Jordan\u2019s turn. \u201cI don\u2019t care what you sing,\u201d Carrie Underwood told him. \u201cEvery time you open your mouth I hear the Holy Spirit,\u201d a simply bonkers thing to say to a young man who\u2019s just sung a Bonnie Raitt ballad about depressive middle-aged alcoholics banging in a brain-dead stupor. Hannah sang the Merle Haggard version of a Lefty Frizzell B-side (\u201cThat\u2019s the Way Love Goes\u201d), giving the strange impression of a music fan singing songs she actually likes, which made her stick out like a sore thumb. They got shooed offstage in the final seconds of the closing credits, no chance to say any parting words, not even the word \u201cgoodbye.\u201d Both just dumped, both looking confused since they\u2019d just kept getting told all night by the judges how amazing they were. (When you are young they assume you know nothing.) <em>Idol <\/em>has always been a show with an acutely self-conscious sense of its own history \u2014 next week they\u2019re bringing back original judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. So no wonder<em> Idol <\/em>made a big whoop about its very first Taylor Swift Night.
