Now, in a new interview with <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/28\/magazine\/taylor-swift-songwriting-process-interview.html\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/28\/magazine\/taylor-swift-songwriting-process-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times Magazine<\/a><\/em>, the superstar went deep on how her songwriting process has evolved in her two decades in the music industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThere are so many different ways that a song begins in my world,\u201d Swift said. She cited the latest single, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/taylor-swift-elizabeth-taylor-life-of-a-showgirl-1235440312\/\">\u201cElizabeth Taylor,\u201d<\/a> from her most recent LP <em><a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/taylor-swift-the-life-of-a-showgirl-album-review-1235439733\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/taylor-swift-the-life-of-a-showgirl-album-review-1235439733\/\">The Life of a Showgirl<\/a><\/em> as an example of when a song \u201ccomes as if from nowhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile her ode to the Hollywood starlet may sound like a track that was years in the making, Swift shared how a car ride with fiancee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/travis-kelce\/\" id=\"auto-tag_travis-kelce\" data-tag=\"travis-kelce\">Travis Kelce<\/a> inspired her to put pen to paper. I go on and on and explaining to Travis, like why I love Elizabeth Taylor so much,\u201d she recalled. \u201cShe fought for artist rights. She was exploited in so many ways, and yet she kept her humanity, she kept her humor, she kept her passion for life, and I was just going on and on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSwift continued: \u201cI\u2019m like, her eyes were violet. Some people said they were blue. Some people said they were violet. I think they were violet. And we arrive, we get home, he gets out of the car, and I\u2019m just in my head. I\u2019m like, this intrusive melody of like, \u2018I cry my eyes violet, Elizabeth Taylor,\u2019 and I\u2019m just like scrambling to open my my record like app on my phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThis kind of spontaneous experience \u201cwhere it floats down like a cloud in front of you, and all you have to do is grab it, and the song transpires from there\u201d isn\u2019t that rare, Swift said. \u201cThat\u2019s the way it happens most of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tElsewhere in the 30-minute interview, the esteemed songwriter shared the stories behind some of her most ambitious and vulnerable songs, like the fan-favorite <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/taylor-swift-all-too-well-longest-number-one-billboard-1261579\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/taylor-swift-all-too-well-longest-number-one-billboard-1261579\/\">\u201cAll Too Well (10 Minute Version).\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAccording to Swift, the original five-minute version came from \u201ca very emotional rant that I did in like a sound check when we were rehearsing for the<em> Speak Now<\/em> tour.\u201d Thankfully, a sound guy captured that session, which turned into the <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/taylor-swift-all-too-well-rob-sheffield-1235127364\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/taylor-swift-all-too-well-rob-sheffield-1235127364\/\">2012 <em>Red<\/em> track<\/a>. Swift then imparted some wisdom to new songwriters when it comes to intense online criticism: \u201cDon\u2019t respond to like trolls in your comments. That\u2019s not what we want from you.
