She shook up \u00adNashville\u2019s conservative values with her 2013 debut, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/same-trailer-different-park-102790\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/same-trailer-different-park-102790\/\">Same Trailer Different Park<\/a>,<\/em> and became Music City\u2019s millennial provocateur. She has soared into the cosmos in search of \u201cgalactic country,\u201d and reached further into the pop sphere on 2021\u2019s synth-y <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/kacey-musgrves-star-crossed-1218529\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/kacey-musgrves-star-crossed-1218529\/\">Star-Crossed<\/a>.<\/em> On her last project, the singer came back down to Earth at last with the folky ruminations of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/kacey-musgraves-deeper-well-review-1234969083\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/kacey-musgraves-deeper-well-review-1234969083\/\"> <em>Deeper Well<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNow, on her seventh studio album, <em>Middle of Nowhere,<\/em> Musgraves is letting the wind take her all the way back home, to a place where there\u2019s no cell service, bulls roam freely, and gorgeous pedal steel guitars are plentiful. Musgraves\u2019 chameleon soul is clearly her superpower, as none of those new terrains have ever felt wholly out of place for her. But it makes sense that this is where the dime-store cowgirl sounds most self-assured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe title track sums up Musgraves\u2019 state of mind. \u201cMiddle of Nowhere\u201d<em> <\/em>doesn\u2019t just refer to a literal remote locale, it\u2019s also about the liminal chapter of her life, one where \u201cThere\u2019s no reckless men\/Who don\u2019t know what they want.\u201d Musgraves finds herself in small-town Texas with her arms wide open, \u201ctrying to lean in to the in-between\u201d of late-thirties singledom without shying away from the ghosts of shitty exes past who haunt her across these songs. Ever the sassy songwriter, Musgraves handles these specters like a pro with witty write-offs. \u201cI don\u2019t have to act like I like all your friends, or your mama,\u201d she deadpans on the breezy, banjo-inflected \u201cLoneliest Girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMusgraves\u2019 hard-won homecoming marks her best full-length release since 2018\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/kacey-musgraves-golden-hour-album-grammy-771594\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/kacey-musgraves-golden-hour-album-grammy-771594\/\">Golden Hour<\/a>,<\/em> which went on to win an Album of the Year Grammy. The albums she\u2019s made in the intervening years were necessary swerves on the way to <em>Middle of Nowhere.<\/em> On her new album, though, this once-and-future country queen leans back into the twangier sounds of her earliest releases to bring the spirit of her home state into focus.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt wouldn\u2019t be a true return to her roots if Musgraves didn\u2019t call on some of country music\u2019s best players, like Willie Nelson and Billy Strings, to jump on tracks like \u201cUncertain, TX\u201d and \u201cEverybody Wants to Be a Cowboy.\u201d Most notably, Miranda Lambert lends her own Texas drawl to the beef-squashing \u201cHorses and Divorces.\u201d (Fans know there\u2019s been some rumored resentment ever since Lambert\u2019s 2013 hit \u201cMama\u2019s Broken Heart,\u201d which Musgraves originally penned for her first LP, and reluctantly gave up.) The singer has long celebrated Mexican culture and even hopped on a song by Mexican-American pop singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4q8lbvjAg3I\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Cuco<\/a> in 2022; last year, she collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=urfum1BFHYg\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Car\u00edn Le\u00f3n<\/a>, one of the most prominent voices in m\u00fasica mexicana. In interviews, she\u2019s talked about how she grew up listening to Mexican and country sounds mingling, and you can hear that influence distinctly on the LP, from the norte\u00f1o accordion and upright bass to the ranchera cowbell and bolero congas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBy the end of the album, Musgraves\u2019 homecoming has turned into a honky-tonk celebration as she relishes in the fun of weaving more Mexican touches into her music, talking her shit with Lambert, and even getting lucky on the sultry \u201cMexico Honey.\u201d At first, it seems like a missed opportunity when she wraps <em>Middle of Nowhere<\/em> with the aching ballad \u201cHell on Me\u201d rather than \u201cRhinestoned,\u201d a sparkly number about toking up \u201cuntil the heartache and the sadness is gone.\u201d But that heartache hasn\u2019t quite subsided \u2014 and \u201cHell on Me\u201d shows she wants to be real about that. On quite possibly her most devastating song to date, Musgraves details the darker side of loneliness over sparse guitar in true country singer-songwriter tradition.
