Derulo smiled and hung his head in relief as his lawyer, Joshua M. Rosenberg, patted him on the back as the judge thanked the jurors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe verdict capped an 11-day trial where Derulo and Spatola offered sharply different accounts of how the song was created. A guitarist who\u2019s performed with major acts including the Weeknd, Kehlani, T.I., Jessie J, and Ye, Spatola testified that he was invited to Derulo\u2019s home studio in April 2020 to \u201ccreate\u201d music for \u201cSavage Love.\u201d He testified that he was not given sheet music and instead came up with original guitar and bass parts that \u201cdidn\u2019t exist there otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSpatola, who went on to become a credited producer on DJ Khaled\u2019s Grammy-nominated song \u201cGod Did,\u201d said he wrote detailed chords for \u201cSavage Love\u201d based on his training and \u201cmusical knowledge.\u201d He flatly rejected Derulo\u2019s claim that the singer simply vocalized the parts for him to play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDerulo, meanwhile, told jurors he only hired Spatola as a session musician to play guitar and bass versions of the already viral composition, \u201cLaxed \u2013 Siren Beat,\u201d by New Zealand artist Jawsh 685, which had surged across social media and fueled an international dance craze early in the pandemic. Jurors were shown a deposition video in which Derulo demonstrated his version of the studio session, singing the guitar and bass parts the way he claimed he did for Spatola.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cMr. Spatola created absolutely nothing on \u2018Savage Love,\u2019\u201d Derulo told the jury. He vehemently denied calling Spatola directly in April 2020, inviting him to be a creative producer on the song. It makes zero sense. I wouldn\u2019t ask somebody to come and create with me when I have no prior knowledge of what they\u2019ve created,\u201d he said on the stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDerulo said it was true that Spatola \u201cplayed a beautiful guitar, and bass,\u201d but he testified Spatola\u2019s only job on \u201cSavage Love\u201d was to do exactly what Derulo told him. He said Jawsh\u2019s composition already had \u201ccaptivated the world,\u201d and he wasn\u2019t looking for an overhaul.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI wanted it to feel like a real piece of music without knocking what Jawsh did,\u201d Derulo said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t sing right on top of Jawsh\u2019s work because there was a saxophone playing the melody I planned to sing. Only those guitar parts.\u201d He added: \u201cHe created a full composition, and under the law, a full composition is independently copyrightable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn his lawsuit, Spatola sought a declaration that he is a co-author of \u201cSavage Love (Laxed \u2013 Siren Beat)\u201d and entitled to songwriting credit and royalties.
