A posthumous album by the late cult folk singer and visual artist Ed Askew<\/a> is being released on Drag City. Out July 31, The Final Painting<\/em><\/a> features contributions from\u2014among others\u2014Bill Callahan<\/a> and William Tyler<\/a>. Sharon Van Etten<\/a> sings backing vocals on the single \u201cGray Air-o-Plane.\u201d Below, watch a video that sets the song to images of Askew\u2019s paintings.<\/p>\n

Askew made The Final Painting<\/em> with producer Jerry David DeCicca, who also worked on his 2013 album For the World<\/em>. They worked from demos that Askew recorded in his apartment between 2020 and his death<\/a> in January 2025.<\/p>\n
