\n\tCharlie Puth<\/a> made sure his tour behind his fourth album, Whatever\u2019s Clever!<\/a><\/em>, is unlike any pop show out there, packed with jazz chords, world-class funk bass, lengthy keyboard and guitar solos, and no choreography or stage gimmickry whatsoever. But his sold-out Friday night show at Madison Square Garden was the most one-of-a-kind concert so far of an already singular tour, thanks to an almost comically eclectic set of guest stars that only Puth would assemble in one place\u2014Art Garfunkel<\/a>, Jimmy Fallon<\/a>, Busta Rhymes<\/a>, and Kirk Franklin. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEach person I\u2019m gonna bring up tonight has influenced me musically,\u201d said Puth, who wore a Knicks cap for the entire show.<\/p>\n

\n\tEarly on, Art Garfunkel appeared on stage for a version of Simon and Garfunkel<\/a>\u2018s \u201cThe Boxer,\u201d with help from Garfunkel\u2019s longtime guitarist Tab Laven. Any occasional shakiness in the performance made it all the more moving, especially when Garfunkel took on lead vocals alone for part of the third verse.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m your student,\u201d Puth said.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe next guest was a shades-wearing Jimmy Fallon, who dueted with Puth on a high-energy cover of Toto\u2019s \u201cAfrica,\u201d a choice that fit perfectly with the yacht-rock aesthetic of Whatever\u2019s Clever!<\/em>. Fallon, in turn, introduced Busta Rhymes, who fully took over the show for a while, with Puth and his band backing him for a medley of hits, from \u201cPut Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See\u201d to a mind-blowingly precise take on the super-speed flow of his verse from Chris Brown\u2019s \u201cLook at Me Now.\u201d Midway through, Busta pointed out the \u201cincredible energy\u201d in the city with the Knicks heading to the finals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tToward the end of the show, Puth explained the importance of gospel music to his songwriting<\/a>\u2014playing some churchy chord changes\u2014and brought out Kirk Franklin. The fired-up gospel star led Puth and his band through\u00a0\u201cI Smile,\u201d \u201cLean on Me\u201d (Franklin\u2019s song by that name, albeit with a closing nod to Bill Withers\u2019 composition) and \u201cStomp,\u201d the Funkadelic-sampling song Franklin wrote for the gospel group God\u2019s Property.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe rest of the show demonstrated that Whatever\u2019s Clever!, <\/em>with its live-band feel, is uniquely suited to the stage;\u00a0Puth\u2019s virtuosic band even includes the same monster-chops bass player, Pastor Funk, who played on the album. Puth rearranged many of his older hits, from \u201cAttention\u201d to \u201cCheating on You,\u201d subtly or radically to better suit his new approach, cracking them open for instrumental breaks and solos. \u201cYou don\u2019t always have to do it in the same way,\u201d Puth said. \u201cBut you keep the heartbeat of it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tPuth, who grew up nearby in suburban New Jersey, treated the concert as a homecoming and a victory lap. \u201cIt hasn\u2019t been perfect in my career,\u201d he said towards the end. \u201cA lot of peaks and valleys. But all of this makes it all worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
