\n\tEarth, Wind and Fire\u2019s 1975 song \u201cReasons\u201d<\/a> is widely considered one of the defining love songs of the past 50 years. The sweeping R&B ballad, flush with horns and string and a yearning groove presided over by Philip Bailey\u2019s impassioned falsetto, is so synonymous with the rich, full, purity of true love that it\u2019s become a wedding staple, soundtracking countless first dances over the decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tBut \u201cReasons\u201d is not about that. At all. In fact, it\u2019s the exact opposite. In Questlove\u2019s new documentary<\/a> about the legendary band, Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs That\u2019s the Weight of the World)<\/em>, Bailey finally tells the whole story behind the That\u2019s the Way of the World<\/a><\/em> classic: It was inspired after a one-night stand\u2026 with a woman who was in a relationship.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tIn a new clip from the film, premiering exclusively on Rolling Stone<\/em>, Anderson .Paak and H.E.R. speak for most people when they explain how they thought \u201cReasons\u201d was just a regular love song. \u201cI thought \u2018Reasons\u2019 was going down the list of all the reasons that he loved this person,\u201d .Paak says with a sheepish smile, while H.E.R. adds: \u201cWhen you have a falsetto like Philip, he can say anything and you\u2019re gonna be like, \u2018This is so beautiful, it\u2019s so romantic!\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tBailey finally gets the chance to respond, and he does so with delighted incredulity: \u201cHow could people think that this song is a love song?\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAs Bailey explains, \u201cReasons\u201d came about after he spent the night with a woman, then woke up the next morning to hear her talking to someone on the phone. \u201cShe\u2019s talking to her dude!\u201d he remembers with a chuckle, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s just a sex call!
