\n\tNick Cave<\/a> and Shane MacGowan<\/a> were close friends \u2014 close enough, at least, to try to cheer each other once with a duet of Louis Armstrong\u2019s \u201cWhat a Wonderful World.\u201d<\/a> On Wednesday, Cave paid tribute to his late friend by performing \u201cA Rainy Night in Soho,\u201d a song by MacGowan\u2019s band the Pogues<\/a>, during a concert on MacGowan\u2019s favorite island, Ireland. The concert took place at Malahide Castle & Gardens.<\/p>\n \n\tCave, who is on tour with the Bad Seeds, played piano, singing MacGowan\u2019s maudlin lyrics about taking stock of one\u2019s life (\u201cI\u2019ve cried for all your troubles\/Smiled at your funny little ways\u201d) with a quiver in his voice. Violinist Warren Ellis played an equally soulful solo during a break from the lyrics. \u201cWow, all right,\u201d Cave commented with a chuckle when he was done. It made for a loving elegy to MacGowan, who died in 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n
