This year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/country-music\/\" id=\"auto-tag_country-music\" data-tag=\"country-music\">country music<\/a> \u2014 or at least a few of its leading men \u2014 is moving up from fishing rigs and pontoons to the easy listening waters of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/yacht-rock\/\" id=\"auto-tag_yacht-rock\" data-tag=\"yacht-rock\">yacht rock<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/keith-urban\/\" id=\"auto-tag_keith-urban\" data-tag=\"keith-urban\">Keith Urban<\/a> released his 13th album, <em>Flow State<\/em>, a collection comprising mostly covers of classic songs like \u201cSteal Away,\u201d \u201cSummer Breeze,\u201d and \u201cJust the Two of Us,\u201d featuring Little Big Town, John Mayer, and lord of the smooth himself, Michael McDonald. It was also co-produced by Dann Huff, who played on some of the seminal yacht-rock records as a session musician in the Eighties. Urban has said that he started the project as an accidental antidote to the stress of our world, and sure, we get that: Who hasn\u2019t calmed their post-breakup heart in heavily divisive times with a little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/doobie-brothers-hall-of-fame-michael-mcdonald-1083580\/\">Doobie Brothers<\/a>? Well, at least Urban has.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe\u2019s not the only one in Nashville currently enamored with yacht rock. Songs like Morgan Wallen\u2019s \u201c7 Summers\u201d have brought those relaxed West Coast vamps all the way to country radio. And last month, Lady A\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/charles-kelley\/\" id=\"auto-tag_charles-kelley\" data-tag=\"charles-kelley\">Charles Kelley<\/a> launched Y\u2019all Aboard on SiriusXM\u2019s Yacht Rock Radio, where he spins his favorite soft tunes alongside guests like Russell Dickerson, Dustin Lynch, Trisha Yearwood,\u00a0and more. The goal, he said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DY2R1O9zbHR\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in an Instagram post<\/a>, is to show that country music has \u201ca lot more than you think\u201d in common with the genre most often associated with poolside easy listening, R&amp;B tones, and jazzy riffs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Keith Urban - Magnet And Steel (Official Audio Video) ft. The themes are a lot of \u2018love lost\u2019 and \u2018how I done my woman wrong,\u2019 which lines up pretty well with classic country. Even some of those intricate chord structures echo older country. But mostly, it\u2019s a lot of escapism. It\u2019s feel-good music, just good vibes and the kind of stuff you\u2019d play on the beach. Country artists don\u2019t necessarily talk about it much, but yacht rock is one of those genres I keep seeing come up again and again. Everyone loves it.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThough Kelley has yet to announce any sort of yacht-rock project, he did recently release a new single featuring Maren Morris that is a more adult contemporary-driven rework of his song \u201cCan\u2019t Be Alone Tonight.\u201d With crisp production, cascading keys, and sharp harmonies, it\u2019s yacht-adjacent indeed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt all raises the question: Is mature country-pop just a landlocked cousin of yacht rock? Turns out, Kelley\u2019s posture that the genres intersect more than meets the eye is pretty astute, as long as you are loose on your definition (which many yacht rock connoisseurs are not, to be fair). Artists like Ronnie Milsap and Jimmy Webb easily straddle both \u2014 the website and podcast <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtornyacht.com\/\"><em>Yacht or Nyacht<\/em><\/a> ranks Milsap\u2019s \u201cWhere Do the Nights Go\u201d at 60.5.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Charles Kelley ft. Dolly Parton has one of Nashville\u2019s highest-ranking <em>Yacht or Nyacht<\/em> songs, with 1980\u2019s \u201cSome Old Fool,\u201d which also includes plenty of disco influences (a combination which, thanks to Kacey Musgraves, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/miranda-lambert-crischttps:\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/miranda-lambert-crisco-acm-awards-1235561470\/o-acm-awards-1235561470\/\">Miranda Lambert<\/a>, and others, is seeing its own twangy resurgence).\u00a0And this fall, if you\u2019re headed to Old Dominion\u2019s Moon Crush Beach Vacation festival, you\u2019ll be treated to a set from Nashville Yacht Club Band, who bill themselves as the city\u2019s premiere Seventies and Eighties cover band.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve put on a monthly show at Scoreboard in Music Valley for a few years now,\u201d says Nashville Yacht Club Band leader Jay Barclay. \u201cThis is a very traditional country venue, so I honestly wasn\u2019t sure how it would go over when they approached us with the idea, but it\u2019s turned out to be a huge success. People just can\u2019t get enough of these songs. On the genuine yacht-rock songs, I\u2019m impressed by the sense of groove that seems to be present. It\u2019s not just soft and mellow, it seems to get more at the heart of what made this music tick than some of the other recent revival attempts I\u2019ve heard. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIf I didn\u2019t know it was Keith Urban,\u201d Huey continues, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have guessed this was a country artist, aside from a real occasional vocal twang on the genuine yacht songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules trending-in-article lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tYacht or not, Urban seems at home on <em>Flow State<\/em>, a land where he can shred cringe-free and glisten up the production as much as his heart desires. Urban has only sounded vaguely country for a while now, and the crooning lane of \u201cMagnet and Steel,\u201d with lovely harmonies from Little Big Town, really works. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn April, he joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/yacht-rock-revue-new-album-tour-dates-959065\/\">Yacht Rock Revue<\/a>, arguably the kings of the yacht-rock revival bands, onstage in Georgia for a pair of songs. And at CMA Fest in Nashville earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZOx7ItNJEj\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">he brought out McDonald<\/a> for his Nissan Stadium performance of \u201cWe Go Back\u201d and looked like he was having the time of his life. Whether <em>y\u2019llacht rock<\/em> becomes a new genre is still yet to be seen.
