\n\tBruce Springsteen<\/a> paid tribute to Clive Davis<\/a>, the legendary music executive who helped shape Springsteen\u2019s career and died on Monday<\/a> at the age of 94.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOver here on E Street, we mourn the death of the great record man and close friend Clive Davis,\u201d Springsteen posted on social media. \u201cAt 22 years old, he changed my life when he signed me to Columbia Records.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added: \u201cHe treated me with the same respect and kindness as a 22-year-old nobody as he did after all my success. A great man. All our prayers and love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis, who auditioned Springsteen in 1972 \u2014 seven years after he became the head of Columbia Records, told People<\/em><\/a> in a 2022 interview that \u201cwhen he auditioned for me, he just stood and played the guitar and sang his songs.\u201d But while he thought Springsteen initially lacked moves onstage, he knew the talent was there. \u201cI listened, blown away by his imagery and poetry. He\u2019s gone on with [Bob] Dylan and Patti [Smith] to be our poet laureates.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLater, he said he suggested to Springsteen, \u201c\u2019would you consider [moving]? Something to consider.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Boss took note, and when Davis saw him perform at a Greenwhich Village club called The Bottom Line, he had transformed his stage presence. \u201cI was flabbergasted,\u201d Davis said. \u201cHe jumped on every table at the Bottom Line! He became a Bruce Springsteen that I had never, ever seen before. He was a whirling dervish. It was not just the movement, it was the spirit of it. It was electrifying. It\u2019s one of those cases where an artist becomes even better and bigger than the reason that you signed them for. I\u2019ve got to tell you, it\u2019s a vivid memory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBackstage after the set, they met up. \u201cI got to the dressing room. I remember opening the door and him looking up saying, \u2018Clive, did I move around enough for you tonight?’\u201d Clive told the outlet.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe pair remained close long after Davis\u2019 departure from Columbia in 1973. In 2022, Springsteen performed at Davis\u2019 90th birthday party, where he performed a rendition of \u201cBlinded by the Light,\u201d a song Davis said he persuaded Springsteen to write.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
