Chris Young recently dropped a deluxe version of his 2025 album I Didn’t Come Here to Leave and on it there is a new song addition, “Wedding Band.”

Don’t let the title fool you into thinking you should add it to your wedding day playlist because if you do, it might lead to your first argument as a married couple.

Young was a guest on Taste of Country Nights where I asked him to detail the origins and story the song is conveying to listeners.

The “Famous Friends” singer said, “The song is a sad song, and it’s basically this guy that always was the guy playing a guitar at a party and he always sort of liked his friend but he never really told her — and then she falls in love and she’s getting married and she’s like ‘Will you play the reception?’ The hook of the song is ‘We’re both leaving with a wedding band.'”

Read More: Chris Young Safe After Plane He Was On Suffered Brake Failure Mid-Flight

The song was written by Tony Lane and Josh Phillips, and Young told me that he was joking with them that he was upset they didn’t call him to be a part of the song writing session that led to the song’s creation.

Verse 1:

I was always a boy at the party with the 6-string And I didn’t have the heart to tell her “No” the night she asked Chorus:

I sing a song Verse 2:

What I wouldn’t give for her to look at me how she looks at him Repeat Chorus

Bridge:

“Just Married” is written on the car they’ll drive away Repeat Chorus

We’re both leaving with a wedding band

Chris Young recently made the switch from RCA Nashville to Black River Entertainment and released his first album on that label, I Didn’t Come Here to Leave in October 2025.

Black River Entertainment is also the home of Kelsea Ballerini.

From “Think of You” to “Famous Friends,” take a look back at some of Chris Young’s best collaborations.

Gallery Credit: Lorie Liebig

Carly Pearce, Mark Chesnutt and Colt Ford have all made headlines recently for serious medical problems, but they’re not the only country stars living with chronic illness.

Gallery Credit: Sterling Whitaker

Why Chris Young’s ‘Wedding Band’ Likely Won’t Actually Get Played At a Wedding

Chris Young’s ‘Wedding Band’ Lyrics

She was the girl next-door, born to be the prom queen
And how I felt about her … hell, I never told her
Never played her a single song I wrote her

So, here I am on stage, she’s wearing white, and I’m wearing black

He takes her hand
Just the two of them
For their first dance
I’ll try and fight back the tears, even though I know I can’t
We’re both here tonight for her
He loves her now, but I loved her first
Her better half and her best friend
We’re both leaving with a wedding band

I’ve never seen “forever,” but it sure looks like them
I’ve played it a million times, ’cause it always was her favorite
And I’m glad it makes her happy, but tonight I hate it

And “broken-hearted” is written on my face

Chris Young’s Record Label
