\n\tWhen the surviving members of the Grateful Dead hit the road as the Other Ones back in 2002, singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi<\/a> was asked to join the group. It was one of the most unpredictable musical experiences the Tedeschi Trucks Band<\/a> member ever had.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cYou just got to be on your toes, you go to be ready for anything. They don\u2019t even know what they\u2019re going to do until they do it,\u201d she tells Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s Nashville Now<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n \n\tThat was especially true of Bob Weir<\/a>, who died<\/a> in January at 78. Before a show, Weir would tell Tedeschi how they were going to perform a song like \u201cRamble on Rose,\u201d only to change it up once they got onstage. \u201cWe get to the show and he starts singing my verse!\u201d Tedeschi laughs.<\/p>\n \n\tPerhaps all of the mind-altering substances had something to do with it. Tedeschi, who had just given birth to her son Charles with husband and bandmate Derek Trucks, recalls how Weir was always offering her mushrooms. \u201cI was nursing on that first tour. He\u2019s like, \u2018You want some?\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018Dude, I\u2019m nursing!\u2019 [And he\u2019d say,] \u2018Oh ok, I\u2019ll do yours too,\u2019\u201d Tedeschi says. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Wait, you just<\/em> took a handful of mushrooms. We\u2019re walking out on Madison Square Garden, you\u2019re about to play \u2018Shakedown Street,\u2019 and you just did a heroic dose of mushrooms. How do you even perform?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAccording to Trucks, Tedeschi and Weir had a special bond. \u201cHis relationship with Sue was really sweet. He\u2019d always light up when she was around. He loved singing with her,\u201d Trucks tells Nashville Now<\/em>. \u201cThat was always fun to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tTedeschi Trucks Band released their latest album Future Soul<\/em> earlier this spring. During an appearance at Bonnaroo<\/a>, they brought their huge band to the stage, making for one of the 2026 festival\u2019s best sets. \u201cWhen you roll into town with a 12-piece band\u2026people know you mean business,\u201d Trucks says.<\/p>\n
