\n\tTwenty years ago, Swift broke through as a rising Nashville star, before quickly, and deftly, pulling off the ultimate crossover pivot<\/a> en route to becoming the biggest pop star on the planet. In terms of pure output, Swift\u2019s \u201ccountry era\u201d comprises a mere quarter of her entire oeuvre: Just four albums out of 12, and maybe only three depending on how strictly you want to classify her genre-blending classic, Red<\/a><\/em>. Yet country continues to loom large over Swift\u2019s career. It remains the well-cherished source of some of her greatest songs, and retains the warm aura of an artistic home she might one day return to.<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, in a lot of ways, Swift never \u201cleft\u201d country music<\/a>. Its traditions are deeply embedded in her songwriting, and she\u2019s found ways to nod back to Nashville as she\u2019s expanded her sonic purview. For instance, Reputation<\/em>\u2019s \u201cNew Year\u2019s Day\u201d<\/a> popped up on the country charts; Lover<\/em>\u2019s \u201cSoon You\u2019ll Get Better\u201d<\/a> featured the Chicks; and there were several country touchstones embedded in the sonic framework of Folklore<\/a> <\/em>and Evermore<\/a><\/em>. Even \u201cRuin the Friendship,\u201d off Swift\u2019s latest release, the glossy Life of a Showgirl<\/a><\/em>, featured a bit of banjo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSwift\u2019s ambitious re-record project offered her additional chances to revisit her country roots: Keith Urban and Maren Morris guested on two of the Fearless<\/em> vault tracks<\/a>, while Chris Stapleton lent his vocals to the decisively country Red <\/em>vault cut, \u201cI Bet You Think About Me.\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tStill, a full-fledged country return has yet to materialize \u2014 though for the first time, there are real signs that one might be imminent. Chief among them is \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You,\u201d<\/a> Swift\u2019s contribution to the Toy Story 5 <\/em>soundtrack. That tune might be the first twang heralding a return, though there a handful of other reasons \u2014 anniversaries, impending accolades \u2014 that make us think Taylor Swift<\/a> could be saddling up for a new Nashville era.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n

\n\t\tA \u201cDeparture and Coming Home\u201d\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tWhen Swift first teased<\/a> \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You\u201d earlier this month, the press release offered a few details ahead of the song\u2019s official release: It would be produced by longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff (marking their first work together since 2024\u2019s The Tortured Poets Department<\/em>); the track was inspired by Jessie, the cowgirl toy from Toy Story<\/em> voiced by Joan Cusack; and it would find Swift returning to her country roots.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI Knew It, I Knew You\u201d is, indeed, distinctly country. It opens with a big sweep of harmonica, before settling into a dusty groove laced with campfire guitar strums. \u201cWriting this song felt like a musical departure and coming home at the same time,\u201d Swift wrote of the tune on Instagram (which also featured a video of herself as a little girl wearing a cowgirl hat and boots). \u201cCreating something for Jessie was a new challenge and also felt like second nature all at once.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tRadio, Radio\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tAhead of the release of \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You,\u201d Swift reportedly met with<\/a> a bunch of<\/a> country radio programmers to play them the song. Such a gesture qualifies as kind, industry-level hobnobbing, but it\u2019s hard to imagine it was really required in this situation. As RJ Curtis, executive director of Country Radio Broadcasters Inc., told Rolling Stone<\/em>, \u201cI have said for a while now that given the right song, country radio will support her again and welcome her back with open arms, and it looks like she delivered in a huge way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUnsurprisingly, \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You\u201d was an immediate hit on country radio<\/a>. It even made history when it became the first song by a woman to close out the panel on impact, meaning, every country radio station reporting to Mediabase signed on to play the song in the first week. In a note shared in the industry trade Country Aircheck<\/em>, Swift wrote, \u201cMan, it\u2019s been a while! Thank you for making history with me. To infinity and beyond.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\tA Notable Anniversary\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tOn Oct. 24, Swift will celebrate the 20th anniversary of her self-titled debut. Hits like \u201cTim McGraw,\u201d<\/a> \u201cTeardrops on My Guitar,\u201d and \u201cOur Song\u201d immediately made her one of the most exciting new voices in country music, and, well, the rest, as they say, is history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSwift hasn\u2019t announced any specific Taylor Swift <\/em>anniversary plans yet, though it\u2019s hard to imagine her letting the milestone pass by. One possible way she might mark it is by finally releasing the \u201cTaylor\u2019s Version\u201d of her debut album, which is one of two re-records she never put out (along with Reputation<\/em>). After buying her masters back in 2025, Swift confirmed<\/a> that she had \u201ccompletely re-recorded\u201d her debut, adding, \u201cI really love how it sounds now.\u201d But she didn\u2019t reveal any immediate plans to drop it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tStill, she did say the re-record could \u201creemerge when the time is right,\u201d and, \u201cif it happens, it won\u2019t be from a place of sadness and longing for what I wish I could have. It will just be a celebration now.\u201d A 20th anniversary certainly fits that description.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tA Likely Honor\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tThe 20 year commemoration of Taylor Swift<\/em>, and the proper start of her music career, also means that Swift is now eligible for induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. This, it should be noted, is no easy feat. Each year, Country Music Association electors induct just three artists: A Modern Era Artist, a Veteran Artist, and an artist from a rotating set of categories (recording and\/or touring musician, songwriter, or non-performer). <\/p>\n

\n\tModern Era Artists become eligible for induction 20 years after they first achieve national prominence, meaning Swift will be under consideration when the electors vote on the 2027 class.\u00a0If she does receive the honor, it would make her the youngest Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, behind Eddy Arnold and Vince Gill, both of whom were 48 when they were inducted in 1966 and 1980, respectively. (Gill, by the way, is all for selecting Swift<\/a> for the honor now.)<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, nothing is guaranteed, but it\u2019s hard to imagine a more likely first ballot hall of famer than Taylor Swift. And what better way than to bolster such a big coronation than with a first proper country album in years?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile many of the headlines surrounding Swift this summer have largely focused on her impending wedding with Travis Kelce, her non-nuptial activities have been very country forward. Beyond releasing \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You,\u201d Swift recently popped up at an event in Nashville where she sang \u201cLove Story\u201d with Lainey Wilson<\/a>. And a few days later she submitted a video message to honor country great Alan Jackson<\/a>, which played ahead of his final live performance<\/a> in Nashville.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd while it\u2019s all fun and games to try and read the pop tea leaves, the fact is: It really does feel like now is the perfect time for a full Taylor Swift return to country. If you look at the pop landscape over the past few years, country music has been one of the dominant forces thanks to artists like Morgan Wallen, Shaboozey, and this year\u2019s undisputed chart champion, Ella Langley. A grand return to country has always been on the table for Swift, and right now, the timing has never been better. Fingers crossed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
