Rather, he\u2019s in charge of making sure someone else\u2019s songs are heard live: Crownover is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/tyler-childers\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tyler-childers\" data-tag=\"tyler-childers\">Tyler Childers<\/a>\u2019 longtime tour manager.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut when he gets a break from overseeing one of the most dynamic live shows in music, and making his beloved rescue dog a budding social media star, he has been known to drop a few songs of his own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cGoing from work brain to creative brain can take a long time,\u201d Crownover, who in his spare time also produces albums for artists like Adeem the Artist, tells me. We\u2019re sitting at a picnic table outside a coffee shop on the campus of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. At our feet is Cheryl, his dog, occasionally yipping at passersby for attention. \u201cI got into tour managing because the idea of just writing songs for other people was terrifying. This lets me keep everything in perspective. When my creative tank is depleted, I can just stay in work mode.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCrownover has been Childers\u2019 tour manager since 2017, running the show while Childers went from bars and dance halls to arenas and stadiums and turned a single-bus-and-trailer outfit into a caravan of tour buses, semitrailers, and team members. Along the way, Crownover has witnessed the rise the Appalachian music scene \u2014 from Childers and Sturgill Simpson in Kentucky to 49 Winchester in Virginia to Charles Wesley Godwin in West Virginia \u2014\u00a0and as the music from the region has grown into a machine, Crownover has proven to be both a vital and popular cog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tChilders, like most artists who can sustain arena tours, hits the road in fits and starts. In 2025, he played just under 50 shows. Such a schedule builds in downtime, not just for the artist but for the touring party. Over two months late last year, Crownover took advantage of that time and released four singles to streaming services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe first was November\u2019s \u201cThe Flame,\u201d a song he wrote with Parker Millsap. The two were college classmates at Middle Tennessee State University and are former roommates. Crownover\u2019s upbringing was devoutly religious, and he played music in church well into his 20s. During a period of soul-searching, he turned to Russell as a sounding board. \u201cWe were laughing at how the modern evangelical movement talks about good news, but it\u2019s the worst news imaginable,\u201d Crownover says of the roots of \u201cGood News\u201d and the series of late-night talks with Russell that gave rise to the song.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe new music came after Crownover had given Nashville songwriting a fair shot. He had moved to Music City for a time, seeking a publishing deal, and walked away with some songs out of the experiment \u2014 ones he packaged as an EP and titled <em>Greatest Hits, Vol. 3<\/em>. But his big takeaway was clarity, for both himself and his craft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThese were the first four that I wrote outside of that frame of mind,\u201d he says. \u201cGetting a little personal and specific, and sonically taking chances that I don\u2019t think other people would. It\u2019s got more indie rock and folk stuff than it does pop country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCrownover\u2019s versatility, and his involvement in producing and management, stems from wanting to be involved in music at all costs. He was \u201cjiggling any handle\u201d and seeing what doors would open. Circa 2017, he happened upon a Childers concert in Indianapolis and jiggled the only handle that would ultimately matter. He was tour managing Millsap at the time but reached out to Childers\u2019 manager to offer his services. Photo: Edwin Keeble*<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs Childers and his band, the Food Stamps, have grown, Crownover has had to learn on the fly to keep up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t think, on paper, that I\u2019m the best tour manager,\u201d he admits. \u201cObviously, I wasn\u2019t scouted. I didn\u2019t have the credit before. I didn\u2019t know what I was doing. And on top of that, every single year with Tyler has been drastically different than the last. Nothing about my job is similar to what it was eight years ago. It\u2019s really just, can you deal with change and be resilient? When you\u2019re tired and you\u2019ve been gone for three weeks, can you still go with that flow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAt least one major organization recently determined that Crownover can indeed go with the flow. In early June, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/country-music\/\" id=\"auto-tag_country-music\" data-tag=\"country-music\">Country Music<\/a> Association announced its annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaworld.com\/cma-touring-awards\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Touring Awards<\/a>: Childers\u2019 team was a finalist for Crew of the Year, and Crownover was a finalist for Tour Manager of the Year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI am the luckiest tour manager alive to get to travel around with a team and band of this caliber,\u201d says Crownover, who goes out of his way to emphasize the awards were a collective honor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThis week, Crownover will find himself wearing his two primary hats. Childers\u2019 ongoing Snipe Hunter Tour hits Chicago\u2019s Wrigley Field on Sunday. But before that, Crownover will take the stage on Friday when he opens for Kory Caudill, keyboard player in Childers band, who has a show at Christ Church in Denver dubbed \u201cConcert for the Human Family\u201d alongside jazz vocalist Imani-Grace Cooper.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Changing by Kyle Crownover\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dVL70s1ptmE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhen he walks offstage, Crownover will find Cheryl waiting. A pre-show routine in Childers\u2019 dog-loving crew is to bring in animals from local shelters and rescues to pet and play with. It\u2019s a win-win for both the dogs and tour members. When this happened before a 2024 show in Chicago, Cheryl was one of three puppies that showed up in Crownover\u2019s tour office. \u201cI just knew if I looked her in the eye, it would be over,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhen shelter reps told Crownover the dog was expected to top out at 10 pounds, he gave in. Childers signed off on Cheryl becoming a crew dog, and Crownover adopted her on the spot.
