A collection of\u00a0David Bowie<\/a>\u00a0recordings, made before his 1967 self-titled debut <\/a>and his 1969 breakthrough album, also titled\u00a0David Bowie<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>but better known as Space Oddity<\/em>, will be released later this summer.<\/p>\n

The Shel Talmy Recordings<\/em>\u00a0features\u00a021 tracks, including 10 previously unreleased\u00a0songs recorded in 1965 by Bowie and by the producer of the Who<\/a> and the Kinks<\/a>, when Bowie was still recording under his birth name, David Jones.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Shel Talmy Recordings<\/em>, due on Sept. 18, also features early contributions by guitarist Jimmy Page<\/a>, then a session musician, and keyboardist Nicky Hopkins<\/a>, who’d go on to perform with the Beatles<\/a> and the Rolling Stones<\/a>, among many others.<\/p>\n

The upcoming set features songs Bowie recorded both as a budding solo artist and with his early bands, Davie Jones & the Lower Third and the Manish Boys.<\/p>\n

The album will be available in CD, LP<\/a>, and digital formats<\/a>, as well as a vinyl edition with an alternative cover\u00a0<\/span>limited to 1,965 copies.<\/p>\n

When Did David Bowie\u00a0First Record?<\/h3>\n

Following the release of Bowie’s 1964 debut single, “Liza Jane,” credited to Davie Jones with the King Bees, he joined the Manish Boys for a single before moving to the Lower Third in 1965.<\/p>\n

Talmy recorded a handful of tracks with Bowie during the year, including the single “You’ve Got a Habit of Leaving” with the Lower Third. By 1966, to avoid confusion with the Monkees<\/a>‘ Davy Jones<\/a>, he changed his name to David Bowie.<\/p>\n

A few more singles with the Lower Third followed before Bowie, encouraged to perform his own songs, went solo with his 1967 debut album.<\/p>\n

The songs on\u00a0The Shel Talmy Recordings<\/em>\u00a0come from Bowie’s 1965 studio sessions with producer Talmy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They include new remasters of previously released material (“I Pity the Fool,” “Baby Loves That Way”), demos (“Today,” I Live in Dreams”) and previously unreleased tracks (“I Want Your Love,” “Certain Woman”).<\/p>\n
