Their debut album, <em>Pink Balloons<\/em>, struck a chord with young Americans watching the 2024 election unfold into a repeat nightmare, and made waves well beyond their local scene; it was sad, hilarious, and invigorating, all at the same time. Ekko\u2019s success landed them opening slots for Jeff Rosenstock and PUP, then sent them back in the studio to make a new record they called <em>The Beltway is Burning<\/em>. They didn\u2019t know how to make sense of it all. All they knew was that it felt awesome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cBefore this, if I sold 30 tickets to a show, I was like, \u2018I did it!\u2019\u201d guitarist Liam Hughes says, reminiscing on their early days. \u201cThe fact that we were actually selling shows and there was significant hype \u2026 There was a tangible feeling of excitement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHughes and frontwoman-bassist Jae Holzman founded Ekko Astral together in 2021. The lineup later swelled to a quintet, compressed to a trio, and returned back to their original duo. But after this summer, Ekko Astral is over. The duo tell <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> that their Aug. 27 show at the Washington, D.C., club DC9 will be \u201cthe final Ekko Astral show for the foreseeable future.\u201d After that, they are retiring the band name, going on \u201cindefinite hiatus,\u201d and officially shelving <em>The Beltway is Burning <\/em>after online infighting and feuds with ex-bandmates, from their perspective, came to define the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHolzman calls Ekko Astral \u201ca social experiment in intra-community tensions.\u201d The decision to call it quits and shelve <em>The Beltway<\/em> was a dizzying and difficult one, so she tried to work it all out on an hours-long stroll through the DMV last month. \u201cI walked and I listened to Kim Petras\u2019 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/kim-petras-detour-album-review-1235571168\/\"><em>Detour<\/em><\/a> and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/slayyyter-worst-girl-in-america-crank-interview-1235569057\/\">Slayyyter album<\/a>, and I just kind of looked back on everything,\u201d she says. The pressure to keep the band\u2019s momentum going following their successful debut record had snowballed into extreme exhaustion and a series of interpersonal conflicts that felt galaxies away from what they originally intended for Ekko Astral.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe rise and fall of Ekko Astral is definitely my fault and also a lot of other people\u2019s faults,\u201d Holzman says. \u201cIt couldn\u2019t withstand the pressure. I couldn\u2019t. Others couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI just wish other people could take the same accountability,\u201d Hughes says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>The Beltway is Burning<\/em> was born in the immediate afterglow of the 2024 presidential election, and produced by Jeremy Snyder, who produced their debut, <em>Pink Balloons, <\/em>and engineers for Idles. The songs were inspired by both <em>Dr. Strangelove <\/em>and maligned 2000s comedies, and a pre-release listen earlier this year suggested a harrowing but often humorous look into our society that always feels like it\u2019s on the brink of collapse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut <em>The Beltway<\/em> ignited sooner than they expected. Days after the band announced the album\u2019s original release plan this February, a report in the <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtoncitypaper.com\/article\/779769\/ekko-astral-jael-holzman-peace-order-miri-tyler-threats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>Washington City Paper<\/em><\/a> emerged revealing that Holzman had filed a peace order against their former drummer, Miri Tyler, alleging threatening behavior, and requested that Tyler refrain from contacting Holzman in-person or in other ways. (A peace order, generally speaking, isn\u2019t as strict as a protective order, and can involve fines or jail time if the respondent attempts to contact the petitioner.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSpeaking with <em>RS<\/em> now, Holzman and Hughes say Tyler officially split with Ekko Astral shortly after Thanksgiving 2025. \u201cI left the band because I realized being a member of Ekko Astral and working with Jae Holzman was too damaging to my mental health and peace of mind to be worth it,\u201d Tyler says in an email to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> confirming the timing of her exit from the band. \u201cMy needs were often disregarded, and I didn\u2019t feel my values and personhood were being properly represented in the context of the band.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m willing to acknowledge that if being in a band with me was truly this limbs-stretching experience, we could have had a conversation about it,\u201d Holzman says in response to Tyler\u2019s comment. \u201cIt pains me to know that\u2019s how she\u2019s left feeling at the end of all this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAfter the <em>Washington City Paper<\/em>\u2019s report was published, a social media avalanche followed. In comments at the time, Hughes <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/topshelf-records-drops-ekko-astral\/\">called<\/a> the fallout from the report a \u201cswirl of misinformed online harassment\u201d and said the band was trying to keep this situation out of the public eye. Accusations mounted that Holzman had utilized the legal system to endanger a fellow trans woman. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAt the height of it, Ekko\u2019s label, Topshelf Records, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/topshelf-records-drops-ekko-astral\/\">dropped the band<\/a> and ceased promotion of <em>The Beltway is Burning<\/em>. The band announced they would release their new album independently at a future date, and withdrew from Liberation Weekend II, the D.C. based music festival they co-founded with the Gender Liberation Movement in 2025 \u2014 but implored ticketholders and D.C. locals to attend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tUltimately, Holzman \u2014\u00a0herself a climate journalist for <em>Heatmap News<\/em> who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/ekko-astral-pink-balloons-remixes-tour-dates-1235312727\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contributed<\/a> to <em>Rolling Stone \u2014 <\/em>says that she feels the <em>Washington City Paper<\/em> report and Topshelf\u2019s statements to the press \u201ctook something that was being handled and made it so much harder for anyone involved to find peace or privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe irony here is that so much of our art on <em>The Beltway<\/em> comments on how echo chambers and media discourses are distracting us from the real threats to us,\u201d she adds, discussing how often micro-cancellations sweep through local queer communities. Holzman reiterates the situation was never supposed to catch fire online, and the duo did everything they could to keep the situation private. \u201cThis was an interpersonal thing that did not need to be music-label gossip. These were personal lives that were going through some really hard shit.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-full alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  lrv-u-border-a-2\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((683\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-align-items-center\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"u-border-color-black u-border-lr-2 lrv-u-padding-tb-025 lrv-u-padding-lr-075 lrv-u-border-b-2 lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-text-align-center a-font-basic-secondary-s\">Holzman and Hughes at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase lrv-a-font-body-xs lrv-u-margin-t-050 lrv-u-text-align-center\">Courtesy of Ekko Astral<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tReflecting on the fallout, Holzman recognizes the criticisms of her decision to go through the court system. \u201cClearly there was some sort of karma going on with respect to my re-education about how to better stand for the values that I do hold,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhen it comes to Topshelf, they say the label\u2019s decision to cease representing them came as a surprise. \u201cI think at the end of the day, it was a financial and emotionally driven decision for them,\u201d Holzman says. \u201cI can\u2019t think of any other reason.\u201d (Topshelf declined to comment further for this story.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHolzman and Hughes didn\u2019t foresee this future, but note that the pressure to succeed strained all members, current and former. After <em>Pink Balloons<\/em>, Ekko Astral went from playing to a few hundred people to opening for major punk bands in front of 2,500 people. \u201c[We\u2019d go] from Orlando to Pensacola, two in the morning, only to drive to New Orleans at 10 a.m., on four hours of sleep,\u201d Hughes says. \u201cIt started to take its toll on people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn the months that followed, Ekko Astral parted ways with former bassist Guinevere Tully, who makes music under the name Rosslyn Station, as well as former guitarist Sam Elmore. Hughes believes their former bandmates viewed Jae as their employer due to her position as Ekko\u2019s frontwoman, songwriter, and quasi-manager. \u201cI am someone who tries to do my best and be a kind person at all times, but I\u2019m also a journalist,\u201d Holzman says, referring to her ways of handling things as \u201ccurt\u201d; she recalls with regret one occasion when she yelled at Elmore. \u201cThat [time] was challenging and I was handling it all on my own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tUltimately, she says, \u201cThe people that were in this band wanted to be in a band, but they didn\u2019t want to be in a band with each other. I think everyone wants to just find peace and tranquility from one another \u2026 That seems to me to be what\u2019s best for everyone, and that includes both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHughes feels the Ekko Astral name has been tarnished, but he isn\u2019t thrilled to be starting over. \u201cI was in denial, because I had too much pride about what we had built and what we were sitting on,\u201d he says, lamenting <em>The Beltway<\/em>\u2019s scrapping. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to just give that up, because to me it felt like starting from zero \u2026 [but] the only way we can really move forward with all this being said is to just make something new if we so choose.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEkko Astral planned their Aug. 27 show in D.C. to commemorate the end of the band.\u00a0(They are also planning a free outdoor show in New York on Aug. 22 to make up for a recent date that was postponed due to a heat wave.) They\u2019ll be auctioning off the painting that appears as the album art for <em>Pink Balloons<\/em>, and all proceeds from the show will go toward funding trans health services at the D.C. non-profit clinic <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitman-walker.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Whitman-Walker Health<\/a>. Their relationship with the producer continues to be a great source of pride, and Hughes likens it to a child trying to impress their dad. \u201cHis taste definitely at first glance can be a little off-putting. But then you realize like most things \u2026 there\u2019s something really cool underneath it if you can strip away the harsh artifice \u2026 I just also personally love a producer that\u2019s just gonna make fun of me if my stuff is too cheesy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHughes plans to move to New York soon, while Holzman will remain in D.C., which she describes as her forever home.
