After enjoying success in the \u201870s, the group\u2019s popularity waned. Heart endured several lineup changes, and Wilson found herself questioning what direction the band should take.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a record contract with Capitol at that point,\u201d the singer recalled during a recent appearance on the <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/ann-wilson-the-magnificent-others-with-billy-corgan\/id1793783665?i=1000775974174\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan<\/em><\/a> podcast. \u201cAnd it was the thing that picked us up from not being able to be arrested. You know, I think we got dropped from Epic. And we met this guy, Don Grierson, who&#8217;s no longer with us, but he was A&amp;R at Capitol at the time. And he said, \u2018Well, I really believe in you guys. So come to Capitol and I&#8217;ll help you find the right songs.\u2019 And so it was come hither, you know. The group signed with Capitol and agreed to use outside songwriters for the first time in their history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a complete devil&#8217;s bargain,\u201d Wilson noted. \u201cThe songs that we were presented with, you just kind of had to swallow real hard and go, well, there&#8217;s something about the song I like, but it hasn&#8217;t got any substance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson found herself singing lyrics that she felt lacked depth or emotion. \u201cThat was the problem I had with most of the songs that we got in the \u201880s, that we did, even the hits.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Ann Wilson Didn&#8217;t Understand the &#8216;Zeitgeist of the &#8217;80s&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>At the same time, Heart was still writing originals, but the label often bypassed them for material from outside writers. In hindsight, Wilson admitted she misread the musical landscape of the \u201880s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a clear case of me not understanding the zeitgeist of the \u201880s at all,\u201d she confessed. \u201cBecause if I had understood that, I would have known that the songs I was writing, we were writing together, were just, they were somewhere else\u2026 And they weren&#8217;t artificial, they weren&#8217;t glossy, all those things that the \u201880s music was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/heart-survived-80s\/\">How Heart Survived the &#8217;80s<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite Heart\u2019s huge \u201880s resurgence \u2013 which included such memorable hits as \u201cWhat About Love,\u201d \u201cThese Dreams\u201d and \u201cAlone\u201d \u2013 Wilson said she would do things differently if she had it over again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have spent more time listening to the radio,\u201d she admitted. \u201cAnd understanding what it was [about \u201880s music] that was turning everyone on so much.
