In a series of interviews, the musician spoke with three figures at the global legal advocacy organization, including an associate director of litigation and two senior attorneys, about what people often get wrong about the fight for abortion access. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHonestly, it\u2019s brutal out there,\u201d Autumn Katz, Associate Director, U.S. Litigation, answered in response to Rodrigo\u2019s question about what it\u2019s like connecting with people who live in states with active abortion bans. \u201cSince Roe fell, the Center has challenged abortion bans in 10 states, and the stories that we hear from our clients are really gut-wrenching.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThey discussed Zurawski v. State of Texas, the case in which Amanda Zurawski, who nearly died of sepsis after being denied abortion care at 18 weeks. It\u2019s one of many horror stories to come out of the restrictive laws around treatment. Katz recalls talking to a woman \u201cwho had to be airlifted out of the hospital where she was seeking treatment and flown to another state in order to receive healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cNot very pro-life to harm these women\u2019s health for the long term and see them in the ICU,\u201d Rodrigo said. \u201cIt\u2019s just so terrifying.\u201d Back in 2024, the musician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/abortion-right-groups-emergency-contraceptives-olivia-rodrigo-tour-1234988691\/\">received pushback<\/a> from pro-life senators and advocates after her Fund 4 Good organization handed out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/olivia-rodrigo-abortion-funds-1234973099\/\">contraceptives and morning-after pills<\/a> during her tour stop in Missouri, which adopted incredibly strict abortion bans following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRodrigo sat with Meetra Mehdizadeh, Senior Attorney, U.S. Litigation, to discuss issues in the reproductive healthcare space that aren\u2019t widely spoken about, but may still be dangerous. Mehdizadeh specifically highlighted the targeting of access to the medication mifepristone. Medication abortions account for the majority of abortions. \u201cWe have decades of studies showing that it is safe and effective, millions of people have gotten medication abortions since mifepristone was FDA approved,\u201d Mehdizadeh said. \u201cBut right now, anti-abortion extremists are trying to get additional, unnecessary restrictions added to mifepristone to make it more difficult to access.\u201d <\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn her conversation with Senior Attorney Hillary Schneller, Rodrigo sought out information about restrictive midwifery laws that perpetuate the U.S. maternal mortality rate. Schneller is currently working a case in which midwives are suing the state of Georgia for putting laws in place to prevent them from practicing. Midwives are often seen as a counter to traditional hospital deliveries, in which Black women in particular are at higher risk of mistreatment. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cBlack women die at three times the rate of white women, and none of this is inevitable,\u201d Schneller said. \u201cSo much of it is preventable, and we know that midwives are a big part of the solution. The change required must target \u201cthose bad laws that have been on the books for honestly, in some cases, decades, 100 years.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRodrigo has long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/olivia-rodrigo-roe-wade-d-c-concert-1347878\/\">vocalized her support<\/a> for abortion rights, telling a Washington, D.C. audience in 2022, \u201cOur bodies should never be in the hands of politicians. I hope we can raise our voices to protect our right to have a safe abortion, which is a right that so many people before us have worked so hard to get.
