{"id":69744,"date":"2026-08-02T14:22:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T14:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/02\/steve-harris-would-only-change-one-thing-about-hated-maiden-album\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T14:22:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T14:22:32","slug":"steve-harris-would-only-change-one-thing-about-hated-maiden-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/02\/steve-harris-would-only-change-one-thing-about-hated-maiden-album\/","title":{"rendered":"Steve Harris Would Only Change One Thing About Hated Maiden Album"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/steve-harris\/\">Steve Harris<\/a> defended <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/iron-maiden\/\">Iron Maiden<\/a>\u2019s eighth album <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/iron-maiden-no-prayer-for-the-dying\/\"><em>No Prayer for the Dying<\/em><\/a>, which often appears at or near the bottom of ranking lists.<\/p>\n<p>The 1990 release \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/iron-maiden-albums-ranked\/\">which UCR filed as the worst to feature Bruce Dickinson<\/a> \u2013 was heavily criticised for its rudimentary sound and rough-edged performances. It stood in stark contrast to their previous two records, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/iron-maiden-somewhere-in-time\/\"><em>Somewhere in Time<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/iron-maiden-seventh-son-of-a-seventh-son\/\"><em>Seventh Son of a Seventh Son<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But in a new interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/music\/albums\/steve-harris-defends-iron-maiden-no-prayer-for-the-dying\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Metal Hammer<\/em><\/a>, Harris suggested that it wouldn&#8217;t take much to save their first record with guitarist Janick Gers in the band, and offered a piece of evidence to support his position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/iron-maiden-epic-songs\/\">10 Most Epic Iron Maiden Songs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a really strong album,\u201d he said. \u201cAt the time, we had gotten so big, with all the grandiose shows, that we were trying to go back to basics a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that the idea came indirectly from bandmate <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/bruce-dickinson\/\">Dickinson<\/a>: \u201cIf I&#8217;m totally honest, I think it was slightly influenced by Bruce\u2019s solo album, <em>Tattooed Millionaire,<\/em> where he was trying to get a bit more basic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a couple of songs on there where he sings a bit rougher. I was thinking I could write something where he could sing with that gruff delivery as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Why Did Iron Maiden Record \u2018No Prayer\u2019 in a Barn?<\/h3>\n<p>Explaining why <em>No Prayer<\/em> had been tracked in an outbuilding at his home, he said: \u201cWe were trying to make it sound like a live album [so] we got the <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/rolling-stones\/\">Rolling Stones<\/a>\u2019\u00a0mobile studio in to record live in the barn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe probably should have put audience noise on it, because it would have sounded more like a proper live album \u2013 we did that with the <em>Tailgunner<\/em> video, and it made a big difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris stated that he wasn\u2019t too concerned what people thought of <em>No Prayer<\/em> \u2013 although he admitted: \u201cIf someone says they don\u2019t like something, that makes me embrace it even more.
