They opened their 21st-century account with an intimate show at the Troubadour on Apr. 1 that year.<\/p>\n \u201cWe get up on that old stage,\u201d the bassist said. \u201cWe have the monitors and stuff, and Axl gets up on the monitor \u2013 I think it was like the second song \ufffd\ufffd\ufffd and he slipped off of it. We have like these in-ears and he can talk to just us\u2026 [He said,] \u2018I think I broke my foot,\u2019 and he played the rest of the show. \u2018Yeah, yeah, it’s broken.\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cAfter the show he goes straight to the Cedars Hospital, which is right down the street. He \u2026 got some pins put into it, and he\u2019s like, \u2018I don’t wanna cancel anything. I’m trying to figure out how to sing sitting down.\u2019 \u2026 [F]or that kind of music, singing sitting down is a really tough thing too\u2026 and singing [Rose\u2019s] stuff is a feat.\u201d<\/p>\n As a result he needed to start the band\u2019s Not in This Lifetime tour in a seated position. Dave Grohl<\/a> lent them the custom throne<\/a> he\u2019d had built to deal with his own recent foot injury \u2013 but that presented its own problems.<\/p>\n The band tried a rehearsal with Rose on a standard chair, said McKagan. \u201c[H]e\u2019s like, \u2018Well, I think I can do it, but I don\u2019t wanna sit in a chair. The bassist continued: \u201c[H]e went\u2026 \u2018I\u2019m gonna go try out.\u2019 \u2026 [We said,] \u2018You think you’re gonna have to try out?\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018Dude, you got the gig!\u2019 So he flew to Atlanta and he tried out.
