Namely, as he put it, \u201cCharli motherfucking XCX.\u201d The British pop star joined the quintessential NYC band for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/charli-xcx-the-strokes-take-it-or-leave-it-outside-lands-1235605980\/\">Take It or Leave It<\/a>,\u201d the closing track on their 2001 classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-albums-21st-century-1235177256\/the-strokes-is-this-it-4-1235187919\/\"><em>Is This It<\/em><\/a>, as she and Casablancas traded verses, bringing the perfect amount of big city rock &amp; roll swagger to the Bay Area.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Strokes - Take It Or Leave It (with Charli xcx) \u2013 Outside Lands 2026, San Francisco\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UbWcVQ3y1wE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCharli had performed her own set a night earlier at the festival, which is held in San Francisco\u2019s Golden Gate Park. She\u2019s touring in support of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/charli-xcx-music-fashion-film-review-1235597074\/\"><em>Music, Fashion, Film<\/em><\/a>, her new album that beat out the Strokes\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/strokes-reality-awaits-review-1235597095\/\"><em>Reality Awaits<\/em><\/a> on the <em>Billboard<\/em> 200 \u2014 a fact that Casablancas had some fun pointing out to the crowd. \u201cWe had a great battle,\u201d he told Charli, bowing down to her. \u201cCongratulations, you defeated us in the album sales.\u201d He then gestured to the audience: \u201cYour new queen of everything, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/charli-xcx\/\" id=\"auto-tag_charli-xcx\" data-tag=\"charli-xcx\">Charli XCX<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s a fitting collaboration \u2014 not just because Charli already enlisted Casablancas to sing on \u201cMean Girls\u201d for her 2024 remix album <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/charli-xcx-brat-and-its-completely-different-but-also-still-brat-review-1235132340\/\"><em>Brat and It\u2019s Completely Different but Also Still Brat<\/em><\/a>, and not because they both sported sunglasses onstage, despite the fact that it was dark outside. What really made this feel like a full-circle moment is the way <em>Music, Fashion, Film<\/em> drew comparisons to rock bands like the Strokes, specifically in her use of raw guitar riffs, glitchy synths, and all the no-fucks-given, leather-wearing energy that goes with both. What\u2019s more, both <em>Music, Fashion, Film<\/em> (\u201cWink Wink\u201d) and <em>Reality Awaits <\/em>(\u201cDine N\u2019Dash\u201d) contain spoken-word segments. Alone, together, these two artists have a lot in common.\u00a0Seeing them perform a song from <em>Is This It<\/em> together at a festival was so perfectly rock &amp; roll. Right? <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tExcept <em>Music, Fashion, Film <\/em>is not a rock album, even if its lead single was called \u201cRock Music.\u201d Charli stressed this in interviews leading up to the release, including in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/charli-xcx-new-album-music-fashion-film-brat-1235576603\/\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em> cover story<\/a>, where she expressed her dislike for being categorized as part of any genre (\u201cI find that to be a very old-school notion\u201d). Cook that basks in stream-of-consciousness lyrics and dizzying, choppy guitar that frequently changes tempo \u2014 to the Strokes\u2019 \u201cSoma,\u201d she didn\u2019t have much to say. \u201cCool,\u201d she replied.\u00a0She might sound a lot like the Strokes at times on her new album, but she sure didn\u2019t want to talk about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSo was her surprise appearance for \u201cTake It or Leave It\u201d a classic Charli move, where she leans into the joke? Was she owning the rock music comparisons, or was it purely circumstantial? It\u2019s\u2026hard to explain.
