{"id":70523,"date":"2026-08-14T15:56:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T15:56:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/14\/edm-johnny-cash-but-no-country\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T15:56:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T15:56:28","slug":"edm-johnny-cash-but-no-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/14\/edm-johnny-cash-but-no-country\/","title":{"rendered":"EDM Johnny Cash, But No Country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFile this under things that don\u2019t surprise us in the least: Secretary of State <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/marco-rubio\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marco-rubio\" data-tag=\"marco-rubio\">Marco Rubio<\/a> has rather batshit taste in music. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEarlier this week, Rubio <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=09XnM4XHjuk\">made an appearance<\/a> on <em>The Katie Miller Podcast<\/em>, hosted by the wife of Stephen Miller, a.k.a. the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/political-commentary\/stephen-miller-worst-white-house-aide-history-1235506964\/\">Worst Living White House Aide in History<\/a>, in which he claimed not to like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/country-music\/\" id=\"auto-tag_country-music\" data-tag=\"country-music\">country music<\/a> and then stereotyped the genre with the panache of an eighth grader. \u201cMost of the songs are about, like, somebody whose wife and dog left them,\u201d Rubio said, adding that he finds the music \u201ctoo sad.\u201d To be fair, his wife, Jeanette, quickly jumped in to defend country music, suggesting he \u201clisten to Morgan Wallen,\u201d an artist who does not, at press time, have any songs about being left by both his wife and dog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEven worse, Rubio then noted the one version of country music he <em>does<\/em> like: terrible EDM mixes. Specifically, one that uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/johnny-cash\/\" id=\"auto-tag_johnny-cash\" data-tag=\"johnny-cash\">Johnny Cash<\/a>\u2019s \u201cRing of Fire.\u201d While he did not name exactly which remix he is partial to, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1Ub9ShkkoJA\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">this one, by Wuki,<\/a> could be a top contender for its popularity on TikTok (it\u2019s predictably nauseating enough to spark the fancy of someone like Rubio). The man his boss often called \u201cLittle Marco\u201d said he likes EDM because it \u201cfuses classical music, country music,\u201d and went on to mention that he is not allowed to play his music in the car because it gives his wife a headache. You can watch the exchange on the, uh, U.S. Department of State <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1632679948201827\">Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMiller then asked Rubio, who <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hola.com\/us\/celebrities\/20260508900517\/marco-rubio-90s-hip-hop-white-house-briefing-dj-wedding\/\">apparently likes to quote rap songs<\/a>, to name his favorite rapper. Rubio claimed Tupac Shakur \u2014 but with the mind-boggling caveat that \u201cobviously he never lived long enough to see what he would have turned in to.\u201d Tupac is regarded as one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/8-ways-tupac-shakur-changed-the-world-128421\/\">most iconic and influential rappers<\/a> of all time. In 2020, when asked about the best living rapper, Kamala Harris responded \u201cTupac,\u201d who is, famously, dead. At least she didn\u2019t say an EDM remix of \u201cDear Mama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRubio has professed his love of EDM before, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=10154474842976509\">notably in conversation with CNN\u2019s Anderson Cooper<\/a> during the Republican primaries in 2016. \u201cI\u2019ve never been to a rave,\u201d he stressed to the host. But he sure has played DJ. In May, as the U.S. was at war, gas prices surged, and division roiled American democracy, Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/political-commentary\/marco-rubio-dj-trump-hosts-golf-tournament-iran-war-1235557427\/\">hopped behind the turntables<\/a> at a wedding. His song of choice?
