{"id":71422,"date":"2026-08-27T13:52:30","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/27\/when-david-bowie-told-robert-fripp-to-play-like-ritchie-blackmore-2\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T13:52:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:52:30","slug":"when-david-bowie-told-robert-fripp-to-play-like-ritchie-blackmore-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/27\/when-david-bowie-told-robert-fripp-to-play-like-ritchie-blackmore-2\/","title":{"rendered":"When David Bowie Told Robert Fripp to Play Like Ritchie Blackmore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/robert-fripp\/\">Robert Fripp<\/a> recalled several of his interactions with <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/david-bowie\/\">David Bowie<\/a>, including recording sessions in 1977 and 1980, and refusing Bowie\u2019s invitation to join his touring band.<\/p>\n<p>Fripp\u2019s contribution to 1977\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/david-bowie-heroes-song\/\">\u201cHeroes\u201d<\/a> is a milestone in rock history \u2013 but the <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/king-crimson\/\">King Crimson<\/a> mastermind recently told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/artists\/guitarists\/robert-fripp-on-his-landmark-david-bowie-sessions\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Guitar World<\/em><\/a> that he hadn\u2019t been sure it would work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I got the phone call&#8230;I was in New York,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t view myself as a working player at that time, having just been in retreat for 10 months with no intention of going back to anything like that, so when David asked me to provide guitar, I said, \u2018Well, I don\u2019t know, but if you\u2019re prepared to take a chance, so am I.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/david-bowie-heroes-covers\/\">Wildly Different Covers of David Bowie\u2019s \u2018Heroes\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He described the three-day session as \u201cvery in the moment,\u201d adding: \u201cI don\u2019t remember any direction from anyone&#8230;although I\u2019m not saying it didn\u2019t take place. &#8230; It was about immediacy, play and laughter, which are ideal working conditions for an improvising, creative person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later that year, Bowie invited Fripp to his New York hotel: \u201cHe asked me to go on tour as his live guitarist, and I said, \u2018No. I\u2019ve just come off the road after six years of touring.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hinting at how much persuasion Bowie tried to apply, he noted: \u201cHe was very charismatic. That\u2019s the first word I\u2019d use to describe him.\u201d He continued: \u201c[B]ut it wasn\u2019t right for me at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould I have been a good live guitarist for David? I don\u2019t know. I think his live guitarist probably did a far better job of covering his catalog than I would have ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Robert Fripp: How People Should Remember David Bowie<\/h3>\n<p>Fripp went on to recall the part he played in Bowie\u2019s 1980 album <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/david-bowie-scary-monsters-and-super-creeps\/\"><em>Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)<\/em><\/a>, saying: \u201cI asked David, \u2018Any suggestions?\u2019 because there\u2019s any number of ways you can go. He said, \u2018Think <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/ritchie-blackmore\/\">Ritchie Blackmore<\/a>.\u2019 I didn\u2019t expect that, but I understood what he meant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I sound like Ritchie Blackmore? No. But I\u2019d seen Ritchie in the Outlaws&#8230;when I was 17, and his playing was phenomenal. He had all the moves. So I\u2019d seen Ritchie, I\u2019d heard Ritchie, and I wasn\u2019t going to play like Ritchie would, but I knew what David meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fripp reflected: \u201cHow should we remember David Bowie? Simply as we knew him.
