\n\tStella Lefty<\/a>\u2019s new song \u201cSummer You Were Mine\u201d interpolates the Chicks<\/a>\u2018 Grammy-winning song \u201cThere\u2019s Your Trouble,\u201d Rolling Stone<\/em> has confirmed.<\/p>\n \n\tFans had noticed similarities between the two songs after Lefty released her debut album Long Way Home<\/em> last Friday but there was no reference to the 1998 song, for which the Chicks won the Grammy for Best Country Performance, on the new song\u2019s listed credits.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tThe confusion was cleared up on Friday when a representative for Lefty\u2019s label, Atlantic Records, told Rolling Stone<\/em> that a streaming platform error had left off \u201cThere\u2019s Your Trouble\u201d original songwriters Tia Sillers and Mark Selby\u2019s names. Both names now appear on the song\u2019s credits.\u00a0(Reps for Spotify and Apple Music did not immediately reply to requests for comment.)<\/p>\n \n\tRolling Stone <\/em>has reviewed materials that show Lefty\u2019s team received proper clearance for the track from Sony Publishing in June, and that Sillers and Selby were noted on the track\u2019s credits in internal label documents in late July before the album\u2019s release.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tSillers \u2014 who has penned country music hits including Lee Ann Womack\u2019s \u201cI Hope You Dance\u201d and \u201cBlue on Black\u201d for Kenny Wayne Shepherd \u2014 wrote the song with her husband Selby, who died in 2017. \u201cWe wrote a bang up, awesome song,\u201d she tells Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cPeople are gonna fall in love with Stella\u2019s song, but then they\u2019re also gonna hopefully learn that it\u2019s an interpolation of \u2018There\u2019s Your Trouble,\u2019 and for a generation that might not know that song, they might go and discover that one too.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tInterpolation \u2014\u00a0which takes an existing melody or lyric and alters it, rather than sampling, which lifts directly from a song with no changes \u2014 has become more common practice in recent years<\/a>. Think Ariana Grande\u2019s \u201c7 Rings,\u201d which transformed The Sound of Music<\/em>\u2019s \u201cMy Favorite Things\u201d to a beat-laden pop hit, or Taylor Swift\u2019s recent \u201cFather Figure\u201d which takes inspiration from the George Michael song of the same name.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tSimilar to sampling, it\u2019s a bankable way to hook a listener whose ear is already somewhat familiar to the melody. \u201cA lot of A&Rs will break artists through an interpolation because it\u2019s so familiar,\u201d a music publishing source tells Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s an easy way to get a new song out to a broad audience. People attach themselves to familiarity.\u201d<\/p>\n
