\n\tNirvana<\/a> will receive MTV<\/a>\u2018s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award later this month at the Video Music Awards<\/em>, which will air live on CBS on Sept. 27. The awards show will also simulcast on MTV and stream on Paramount+. The network\u2019s announcement did not mention who from the band would be on hand to accept the award.<\/p>\n \n\tMTV made the announcement on Sept. 9, the 34th anniversary of Nirvana\u2019s instrument-smashing performance at the VMAs<\/a>. At that show, the band performed Nevermind\u2019s <\/em>\u201cLithium\u201d and Kurt Cobain teased the opening chords to the then-unreleased In Utero <\/em>song, \u201cRape Me,\u201d to irritate network censors. <\/p>\n \n\tThe gig also featured Krist Novoselic throwing his bass in the air and having it land on his face, knocking him over during Cobain\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m not gonna crack\u201d refrains at the end. The performance ended in feedback as Cobain pushed his guitar into the amplifier and they pulled Dave Grohl\u2019s drums off the stage. Grohl then went to the front of the stage and said, \u201cHi Axl, hi Axl, where\u2019s Axl?\u201d<\/p>\n \n
