The two bands\u2019 takes on \u201cBarstool Blues\u201d\u00a0and \u201cLike a Hurricane\u201d appear on <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/story\/mj-lenderman-kurt-vile-and-modest-mouse-cover-neil-young-for-new-compilation\/\">volumes two and three<\/a> of the <em>Heart of Gold<\/em> compilation series, which arrive both at once on November 6. Modest Mouse teamed with <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/651-califone\/\">Califone<\/a> for \u201cBarstool Blues,\u201d MMJ recruited the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for \u201cLike a Hurricane,\u201d and both of the resulting songs are below.<\/p>\n<p>If your appetite for Neil Young covers remains unquenched, the latest volumes include previously released takes on \u201cHelpless\u201d and \u201cAfter the Gold Rush\u201d by King Princess and Draco Rosa, respectively. Contributions from MJ Lenderman, Kurt Vile, Lucinda Williams, and Ben Gibbard are still to come, all benefitting California\u2019s <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeschool.org\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.bridgeschool.org\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeschool.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bridge School<\/a>. Fiona Apple and Courtney Barnett were among the participants in the first volume.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac Brock said in a press release:<\/p>\n<aside aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"PullQuoteEmbedWrapper-sc-efqGLV dYCNhz composition body pullquote bordered\" data-testid=\"pullquote-embed\">\n<div class=\"PullQuoteEmbedContent-sc-fzpWpD cntEks quote\"><span>Getting to do a cover of one of Neil\u2019s songs on a project like this matters both because it gets to be helpful for an important cause like The Bridge School, and because it\u2019s actually attached to the person whose song we are covering. It\u2019s really\u2026 well, it\u2019s a stressful honor. The stakes seem a little higher. I like that.<\/p>\n<p>I had initially chosen and started working on a cover of \u2018Cortez the Killer\u2019 before I realized that, in order to pull this off the way I\u2019d like to, it was going to take me a thousand hours. Then it struck me: there is a song that I like just as much and find personally more relatable, \u2018Barstool Blues.\u2019 This was a song I could really sing my teeth into.<\/p>\n<p>On top of being such a catchy song, it was something that I felt more of a mental and emotional connection to than \u2018Cortez\u2019 anyway, which I have more of a \u201c historical\u201d emotional connection to.<\/p>\n<p>The next challenge any time you cover a song you\u2019ve heard so many times is that it can be difficult to find a way not to make your version too close to the original. After all, why would anyone need that?<\/p>\n<p>I figured it out.
