\n\tDuncan Sheik, the singer who won a Grammy nomination for his 1996 debut single \u201cBarely Breathing,\u201d is currently in critical condition.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe artist\u2019s social media account posted a statement on Wednesday about his health<\/a>. \u201cWe would like to share an update with Duncan\u2019s fans and the public. Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition,\u201d read the post. \u201cOut of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time. We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe message thanked fans for their \u201ccontinued love and support.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe cause behind Sheik\u2019s medical care is not currently clear. A representative for Sheik did not immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe New Jersey native released his self-titled debut album in 1996. The LP featured the single \u201cBarely Breathing,\u201d which was certified gold and reached Number 16 on the Billboard<\/em> Hot 100, remaining on the charts for 55 consecutive weeks. Sheik received a Grammy nod for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for the hit song.<\/p>\n

\n\tSheik has also composed soundtracks for films, and created music for plays and musicals. His work includes the score for the 2004 drama film, A Home at the End of the World<\/em>; the music and orchestration for the critically acclaimed rock musical, Spring Awakening<\/em>, which opened on Broadway in 2006; and the musical numbers for Alice by Heart<\/em>, a 2019 off-Broadway production inspired by Lewis Carroll\u2019s 1865 classic novel, Alice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tSheik was also approached by producer Jesse Singer to help adapt Bret Easton Ellis\u2019 film, American Psycho<\/em>, into a musical. The production, which featured Sheik\u2019s EDM-inspired tunes, premiered at London\u2019s Almeida Theatre in 2013.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a version of American Psycho<\/em> that you could do that is campy, kitschy and incredibly broad and comic. I wasn\u2019t interested in that,\u201d Sheik told Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> in 2016, the year the musical hit Broadway. \u201cI wanted it to be a little deeper and more ambiguous weird and strange and, hopefully, beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
