\n\tSome of the greatest shows on Earth these days are coming from the road warriors who\u2019ve been out there the longest. The toughest are in their eighties: Bob Dylan<\/a>, Neil Young<\/a>, George Clinton<\/a>, Paul McCartney. These are the relentless lifers who have it in their blood \u2014 the ones who can\u2019t not<\/em> do it. They\u2019re thriving on the road in the 2020s because that\u2019s where they feel at home, and they\u2019re not saving a drop for next year. These legends are way past hiding the cracks in their voices or the lines on their faces. That\u2019s for kids. Instead, they flaunt their eightysomething voices like they\u2019re showing off battle scars.<\/p>\n \n\tDylan is a model for how to keep it fresh: He sings whatever the hell he feels like, with whatever juice he\u2019s got in his 85-year-old growl on any given night. He\u2019s been formidable all summer long, busting out Bo Diddley and Charlie Rich covers with help from a rotating trio of jazz-ace guitarists (Julian Lage, Jad Tariq, and Joel Paterson). But he\u2019s the whippersnapper up there. The se\u00f1or<\/em>: Willie Nelson<\/a>, at 93, who spends his show sitting down, yet playing his unmistakable guitar with those still-mighty fingers. When he can\u2019t hit the notes, he just talks the songs, without surrendering any grit. Seeing Willie talk his way through \u201cFunny How Time Slips Away,\u201d a country classic he wrote more than 60 years ago, while playing that guitar \u2014 it\u2019s not merely an inspiration, it\u2019s a challenge, as if he\u2019s saying, \u201cWhat are you<\/em> doing with your slipping-away time?\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tGeorge Clinton spent last year on the road, celebrating the P-Funk magic. For his 2026 run, he built a whole new Mothership to land onstage, since the original is now in the Smithsonian. Paul Simon<\/a> announced his retirement in 2018, citing his hearing loss, but made a surprise comeback last year, explaining that new technology now finally made it possible for him to hear himself again. His shows since then have been truly elevating, focused on new material he personally cares about: His 2023 album Seven Psalms<\/a><\/em>. It\u2019s meant so much more than a full oldies set could have.
