{"id":73531,"date":"2026-09-25T15:11:56","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T15:11:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/25\/how-the-final-dolly-parton-song-ended-up-on-u2s-new-album-2\/"},"modified":"2026-09-25T15:11:56","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T15:11:56","slug":"how-the-final-dolly-parton-song-ended-up-on-u2s-new-album-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/25\/how-the-final-dolly-parton-song-ended-up-on-u2s-new-album-2\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Final Dolly Parton Song Ended Up on U2&#8217;s New Album"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/u2\/\">U2<\/a> recently announced their upcoming album <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/u2-carnaval-de-luz-album-song-silencio\/\">Carnaval De Luz<\/a><\/em>, one note jumped out above the rest: The LP features the final vocal recording by <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/dolly-parton\/\">Dolly Parton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She contributed to the album-closing song on <em>Carnaval De Luz<\/em> called \u201cTorn.\u201d In a conversation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/dolly-parton-final-recording-bono-u2-torn-interview-1235630774\/?bt_ee=kKvZ28ybQrDllYXcAAsN1w96FRkX9C17sbtuy1R2gxptghzP53OKARxRsuNHAcI6&amp;bt_ts=1790290624836\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/bono\">Bono<\/a> revealed that he\u2019d initially approached Parton to collaborate on an Irish folk music side project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said, &#8216;That&#8217;s a little too Irish for me,'&#8221; Bono explained, recalling Parton\u2019s initial reaction to the material. \u201cBut she said, \u2018I got this song. It\u2019s called \u2018Torn,\u2019 and do you wanna see where you can take it somewhere else, maybe?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bono and Snow Patrol\u2019s Johnny McDaid put their spin on &#8220;Torn,&#8221; penning lyrics about a mother watching her family fall apart. Parton liked it and agreed to contribute vocals. \u201cShe sang her heart out,\u201d Bono noted, \u201cand I cannot believe that\u2019s an 80-year-old woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018She Got Out of Bed to Sing This Song\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Parton was already in declining health when she recorded her parts for \u201cTorn.\u201d  \u201cWhen she got ill, she got out of her bed to sing this song,\u201d Bono said. \u201cAnd you can hear that. And I can\u2019t even listen to it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news release announcing <em>Carnaval De Luz<\/em> described \u201cTorn\u201d as \u201ca tender country song detailing broken family ties that holds wider resonances.\u201d The final mix of the tune received Parton\u2019s approval before her death.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/dolly-parton-rock-covers\/\">31 Dolly Parton Rock &#8216;n&#8217; Roll Covers<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDolly loved it,\u201d <em>Carnaval De Luz<\/em> producer Jacknife Lee confirmed. \u201cShe was so proud of her vocal and the recording. She was thrilled with it. We were very nervous that she might not approve, or would be uncomfortable with it, but she loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Bono, the pain of Parton\u2019s death remains fresh. However, he&#8217;s grateful for the time they had together. \u201cIt\u2019s very moving to have had these intimacies with such a figure,\u201d Bono said. \u201cThe fact that they\u2019re not there now, in any way you can call back, other than through her songs, is very sobering.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"photogallery-wrapper blog-photogallery \">\n<h2 class=\"photogallery-title\">U2 Albums Ranked  <\/h2>\n<div class=\"photogallery-description\">\n<p>U2 don&#8217;t inspire weak reactions in people.
