She practically invented this show the very first time it aired in 1984, making her infamous debut in her white wedding gown as the scandalous floor-humping bride in \u201cLike a Virgin.\u201d That performance did wonders for her, but even bigger wonders for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/vmas\/\" id=\"auto-tag_vmas\" data-tag=\"vmas\">VMAs<\/a>\u2014it\u2019s the moment this event has always aspired to match ever since. It established her as the once and future queen of this show. But strange as it seems, until last night, she hadn\u2019t rocked the VMAs since 2003, when she did an even better version of \u201cLike a Virgin,\u201d in her legendary make out session with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/britney-spears\/\" id=\"auto-tag_britney-spears\" data-tag=\"britney-spears\">Britney Spears<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSo the stakes were high for her hotly-anticipated return last night. But her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/madonna-vmas-opening-performance-charli-sabrina-1235630877\/\">amazing performance<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sabrina-carpenter\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sabrina-carpenter\" data-tag=\"sabrina-carpenter\">Sabrina Carpenter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/charli-xcx\/\" id=\"auto-tag_charli-xcx\" data-tag=\"charli-xcx\">Charli XCX<\/a> stole the show, with a medley of \u201cOne Step Away,\u201d \u201cBring Your Love,\u201d and \u201cDanceteria,\u201d from her recent <em>Confessions II.<\/em> It wasn\u2019t just the highlight of the night; it was one of the most stunning performances in the entire history of the VMAs, hands down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s fitting that she began with Sabrina, who was just four years old when Madonna smooched Britney, but a quintessential Daughter of the House of Ciccone. \u201cIt\u2019s mother,\u201d a voice moaned at the beginning, as Madonna recited her disco catechism. \u201cThe dance floor is not a place,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a threshold. A ritualistic space where movement replaces language.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWearing a black beret, Sabrina played the piano with Madonna writhing on top of it. They did their Coachella-slaying duet \u201cBring Your Love,\u201d with Sabrina twisting and crawling in her glitter-spangled black liederhosen. Madonna wrestled with black-clad storm troopers, then got rolled on a gurney through the crowd, until a really confusing interlude where she met a bizarro alien gospel choir in white gowns. (A very Creed touch.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut the performance really exploded when Charli XCX strutted in for \u201cDanceteria,\u201d as the stage transformed into the famous early-Eighties NYC disco, with the cool girls hanging out in the men\u2019s room. Over here, Madonna and Charli rocking out. Over there, Sombr posing as a scantily clad black-leather boy. Hey, look\u2014it\u2019s Debi Mazar, years before <em>Goodfellas<\/em>, just another party girl and Madonna\u2019s coolest club-kid girlfriend, name-checked in the song. (Also, a callback to Debi\u2019s cameo in the \u201cMusic\u201d video from Y2K\u2014maybe Madonna\u2019s peak era ever?) Hey, that guy looks like\u2026wait, it <em>is<\/em> Fab Five Freddie, also namechecked. Julia Garner, dressed in the \u201cOpen Your Heart\u201d black corset and haircut. Tony Ward, from the \u201cJustify My Love\u201d video. The \u201cBoy Toy\u201d belt buckle. Producer Andrew Watt, as Keith Haring. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/seth-rogen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_seth-rogen\" data-tag=\"seth-rogen\">Seth Rogen<\/a> \u2026 wait, really? What the hell is Seth doing here? Who dragged <em>him<\/em> to a disco? Ah, well\u2014everybody\u2019s welcome here. Anyone can be a star on Madonna\u2019s dance floor. That\u2019s the whole point of the song\u2014as she keeps chanting, \u201cEverybody here is a work of art.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tA clever detail: Lou Reed\u2019s face on the \u201cDanceteria\u201d bathroom wall, the Mick Rock photo from the cover of his 1972 classic <em>Transformer<\/em>, as they all sang the \u201cdoo de doo de doo\u201d hook from \u201cWalk on the Wild Side.\u201d (Watt walked the red carpet in a t-shirt displaying that Lou photo.) Given my unfortunately encyclopedic memory for trashy award shows, I can tell you this was Lou\u2019s first cameo on the VMAs since 2006, when he and Jack White played \u201cWhite Light\/White Heat\u201d with the Raconteurs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMadonna made it all feel like a musical autobiography for her, doubling as a capsule history of club culture. It summed up where she came from, why she left, why she came to New York, and what she made of the dreams she worked to bring to life. That\u2019s the theme of her excellent album <em>Confessions II<\/em>. Her best moment: when she won the Best Dance category, threw her arms around Charli and Troye Sivan, and said, \u201cI\u2019m kind of unclear what this award is for?\u201d You and us both, Madonna. Charli had to re-read the envelope to confirm it was for her <em>Confessions II<\/em> short film. She complained about the mic stand being too high for her. She also did one of the most uncomfortable dad jokes ever heard on an award show, including the ones hosted by Billy Crystal: \u201cFirst of all, I\u2019d like to thank my fingers, because I can always count on them.\u201d Why in God\u2019s name did she say this? Madonna, you\u2019re on live TV here. Hold it together. We\u2019re rooting for you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut even when she was making everyone squirm (poor Troye looked terrified), she was still the coolest, and she knew it, fully confident this was her show. I came to life on the dance floor. I found my community on the dance floor. I fell in love with people on the dance floor. And I lost many people I loved on the dance floor.\u201d It was a powerful confession. \u201cDance brings everybody together, okay?\u201d she said. \u201cWe are all equal on the dance floor.\u201d You couldn\u2019t ask for a more succinct summary of everything Madonna\u2019s VMAs performance\u2014or her entire career\u2014has been about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI\u2019ve been a Madonna fan\u2014and an MTV junkie\u2014since the early days. I\u2019ve seen every VMAs from the beginning, since the night she debuted with \u201cLike a Virgin,\u201d rolling on the floor in her bridal gown, with her rosary beads and Boy Toy belt buckle. So I\u2019m used to seeing Madonna steal the show, year after year\u2014with her glam \u201cExpress Yourself\u201d in 1989, her Marie Antoinette-style \u201cVogue\u201d in 1990, her \u201cRay of Light\u201d with Lenny Kravitz in 1998. Not to mention her infamously rowdy rooftop interview at the 1995 VMAs, throwing shade with Courtney Love and Kurt Loder. Give Madonna a few minutes of live MTV and she\u2019ll always find a way to seize the moment. But this performance\u2014especially the \u201cDanceteria\u201d half\u2014was so emotional, so deeply personal, so elegiac, yet without sacrificing any of the disco sleaze or body-electric jubilation.
