{"id":74170,"date":"2026-10-02T19:01:52","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T19:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/02\/matchbox-twenty-on-their-near-breakup-and-30th-anniversary\/"},"modified":"2026-10-02T19:01:52","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T19:01:52","slug":"matchbox-twenty-on-their-near-breakup-and-30th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/02\/matchbox-twenty-on-their-near-breakup-and-30th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Matchbox Twenty on Their Near-Breakup and 30th Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSeveral song titles on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/matchbox-twenty\/\" id=\"auto-tag_matchbox-twenty\" data-tag=\"matchbox-twenty\">Matchbox Twenty<\/a>\u2019s debut album, <em>Yourself or Someone Like You<\/em>, could have summed up the record\u2019s fateful release day: \u201cDamn,\u201d \u201cShame,\u201d \u201cReal World,\u201d and \u201cBusted.\u201d The band awoke on Oct. 1, 1996, as 20-something rockers proudly dropping their first album, but the revelry was short-lived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe were all really, really excited, then got a call from our manager saying our label had folded,\u201d recalls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/rob-thomas-clive-davis-tribute-essay-1235582736\/\">frontman Rob Thomas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI was like, \u2018Oh shit,\u2019\u201d adds bandmate Paul Doucette. \u201cBut oddly, I had a weird confidence we\u2019d be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhat Doucette may not have imagined was that three decades later, they would not only be fine, but preparing to kick off 30th anniversary celebrations with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axs.com\/events\/1622813\/matchbox-twenty-tickets\/promos\/1197037?skin=fairaxsreg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">one-night-only Hollywood show<\/a> dedicated to <em>YOSLY<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn an exclusive interview with <em>Rolling Stone, <\/em>Doucette and Thomas shared that the intimate Oct. 12 event at the Fonda Theatre will see them perform the 12-times-platinum album in its entirety. Fans can <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axs.com\/events\/1622813\/matchbox-twenty-tickets\/promos\/1197037?skin=fairaxsreg\">r<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axs.com\/events\/1622813\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">egister to buy tickets<\/a> during on-sales on Oct. 8 and 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt was a few miles from the Fonda where Thomas and Doucette (besties who formed Florida band Tabitha\u2019s Secret with Brian \u201cPookie\u201d Yale, before recruiting Kyle Cook and Adam Gaynor to become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/matchbox-twenty-new-song-dont-get-me-wrong-1234730399\/\">Matchbox Twenty<\/a>) were so captivated by a Caf\u00e9 Largo performer dedicating a song to \u201cyou, or someone like you\u201d that they stopped the presses of their CD debut, originally called <em>Woodshed Diaries<\/em>, for a new title.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe name change caused a six-week delay, after which Atlantic Records imprint Lava Records imploded on the album\u2019s scheduled drop date. It was an especially shaky period given debut single \u201cLong Day\u201d wasn\u2019t performing well, and it would be months before \u201cPush\u201d took off (eventually landing <a href=\"https:\/\/matchboxtwenty.com\/releases\/yourself-or-someone-like-you\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><em>YOSLY<\/em><\/a> top 10 spots in the U.S., New Zealand and Australia).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMany more hurdles rained down in the three decades that followed \u2014 music industry changes, family demands, divorces, the pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DcIHwfMR9si\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">microphone mishaps<\/a>, and recently, a management switch.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHowever, the greatest cracks emerged as Thomas\u2019 solo career took flight following his 2005 debut <em>\u2026Something to Be. <\/em>The chart-topping album was followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/rob-thomas-confessions-of-an-unapologetic-pop-star-74143\/\">2009\u2019s <em>Cradlesong<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>before Matchbox reunited for 2012\u2019s <em>North. <\/em>As 2016 neared, Thomas\u2019 bandmates expected to reconvene for a 20th anniversary tour, however he was focused on 2015\u2019s <em>The Great Unknown<\/em>, largely inspired by wife Marisol\u2019s grueling health battles. Although his tour wrapped in early 2016, the band never pulled together a summer jaunt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe frustrating part for Kyle and myself is you start to count on those things,\u201d says Doucette. \u201cYou\u2019re like, \u2018It\u2019s 2013. I\u2019ve just got to get through 2014 and 2015, then I\u2019m going to tour. I\u2019ve got that to look forward to.\u2019 Then you\u2019ve got a kid and a house, so you start organizing your life thinking this big thing\u2019s going to happen. And it didn\u2019t. That was breaking point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019d managed to ride the wave of Rob\u2019s solo career for a long time,\u201d Doucette, 54, continues. \u201cNot to say it didn\u2019t have its frustrations because it 1000 percent did. I remember one particularly big fight between Rob and I in Mexico City that was not fun. And we don\u2019t ever fight about personal things \u2014 it\u2019s always about scheduling and direction. We\u2019d managed until 2016, then everything broke apart for a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe band learned Cook had quit the group through a social media post in which he cited communication issues, touring disagreements, and a breakdown of democracy. Thomas, 54, is quick to note Cook\u2019s exit came while Matchbox wasn\u2019t active and that he returned in time for their next project. Still, Thomas had his solo band learning hits like \u201c3AM\u201d \u2014 \u201cin case Matchbox didn\u2019t come back.\u201d Cook meanwhile worked on solo music and with side act Rivers and Rust.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhat fans didn\u2019t realize is that while Cook\u2019s departure made global headlines, behind the scenes, Thomas and Doucette were facing their own turbulence. \u201cIt was stressful because Rob and I weren\u2019t in the best place either, so I was trying to hold things together with all my limbs,\u201d Doucette shares. \u201cPeople on the business side were taking a harder line than I wanted to with Kyle, so I was fighting things I didn\u2019t want to fight to put it all back together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCook, 51, rejoined for 2017\u2019s <em>A Brief History of Everything Tour<\/em>, and the band found their way \u201cBack 2 Good,\u201d releasing 2023\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/matchboxtwenty.lnk.to\/WhereTheLightGoes\"><em>Where the Light Goes<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/matchboxtwenty.lnk.to\/northbsidesIA\"><em>The North B-Sides<\/em><\/a> in February<em>. <\/em>The key to the revamped dynamics carrying them through the last decade? Communicating better. And for Thomas, learning to say \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Grammy-winning musician, who most recently released his sixth solo album, <a href=\"https:\/\/rob-thomas.lnk.to\/AllNightDays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>All Night Days<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> has such a penchant for agreeing to everything that he was in talks about starring in a comedic series, <em>Rob Thomas Can\u2019t Say No.<\/em> \u201cI mean, it\u2019s fucking true,\u201d quips Doucette.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe well-meaning trait has rooted many conflicts. As Thomas reflects: \u201cI didn\u2019t want to let people down, but I would let them down harder because instead of setting real expectations, I\u2019d throw half promises out to everything, then [later] say, \u2018I don\u2019t want to do that.\u2019 Paul would sit me down and say, \u2018It\u2019s not about whether you do or don\u2019t. It\u2019s about letting me know, so I can plan my fucking future.\u2019 Everything became easier once we started being open and transparent.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDoucette has meanwhile been enlightened to Thomas\u2019 predicaments since pursuing more film scoring, finding immense joy as a composer on Apple TV\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/for-all-mankind-season-4-review-joel-kinnaman-mars-space-race-1234866720\/\"><em>For All Mankind<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018I\u2019m about to start season five of a show. I can\u2019t drop that,\u2019\u201d says Doucette. \u201cI now have something to balance that\u2019s inconvenient for everyone else. It\u2019s given me more empathy for what Rob\u2019s gone through.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFans will be rewarded by healthier band relations because what never came to fruition for their 20th will be compensated for bountifully with Matchbox\u2019s planned festivities for their 30th. A 2027 tour will celebrate and span their entire discography, while the Fonda show (part of the venue\u2019s own 100th anniversary celebrations) is all about going back to the start \u2014 <em>YOSLY.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tReturning to Hollywood is a full-circle moment for the Grammy-nominated group, who had initially explored a Broadway residency, but struggled finding adequate venues. They spent their early days in L.A. recording, filming videos, and frequenting hot spots like the Viper Room and Formosa Cafe. \u201cThere\u2019s a nostalgia there, especially because we\u2019re focusing on the first record,\u201d says Doucette. \u201cAnd nostalgia for that time we were discovering L.A. for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s their first gig at the Fonda and there\u2019s another first for Doucette \u2014 performing <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wYyoImweIjY?si=5ltXh7a1__ZeZg7U&amp;t=4271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cBusted\u201d<\/a> as guitarist, having switched from drums to guitar following Gaynor\u2019s 2004 exit. Thomas jokes they gladly retired performing the angst-fueled song after releasing sophomore album <em>Mad Season.<\/em> What fueled Thomas\u2019 palpable wrath in the fiery track? \u201cI was angry I was having to manufacture all this angst!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn contrast, \u201cKody\u201d (about the death of Thomas\u2019 then-girlfriend\u2019s infant nephew) will likely have fans seeking some Kleenex. Then there\u2019s chart-toppers like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/rob-thomas-matchbox-twenty-ryan-gosling-push-barbie-movie-1234795213\/\">Push<\/a>,\u201d which Ken (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ryan-gosling\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ryan-gosling\" data-tag=\"ryan-gosling\">Ryan Gosling<\/a>) endlessly serenaded to Barbie (Margot Robbie) in Greta Gerwig\u2019s <em>Barbie <\/em>film. Thomas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DM3Uy5OyLqR\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">dreams of performing the song with Gosling<\/a> someday. \u201cThat invite\u2019s always open,\u201d he offers. \u201cBut I\u2019ve been told I\u2019m not allowed within 150-feet of his house anymore.
