{"id":74366,"date":"2026-10-06T15:34:37","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T15:34:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/06\/pearl-jam-van-halen-neil-young-versions\/"},"modified":"2026-10-06T15:34:37","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T15:34:37","slug":"pearl-jam-van-halen-neil-young-versions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/06\/pearl-jam-van-halen-neil-young-versions\/","title":{"rendered":"Pearl Jam, Van Halen, Neil Young Versions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Everyone from Roger Daltrey and Lucinda Williams to Bruce Springsteen, Dave Grohl, Dave Matthews, and Billy Strings have played the 1989 Neil Young classic in just the last couple of weeks<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n\t\t<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-not-a-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNeil Young and the Restless, which included Crazy Horse guitarist Frank \u201cPoncho\u201d Sampedro, were touring America in early 1989 when a proposed cultural exchange with the Soviet Union \u2014 which would have sent the rock band into the repressive communist nation and the Russian ballet into America \u2014 fell apart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cNeil was like, \u2018Damn, I really wanted to go,&#8217;\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/crazy-horse-guitarist-frank-poncho-sampedro-my-gut-tells-me-this-is-the-last-tour-234128\/\">Sampedro recalled to <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>in 2013.<\/a> \u201cI said, \u2018Me too. I guess we\u2019ll have to keep on rockin\u2019 in the free world.\u2019 He was like, \u2018Wow, that\u2019s a cool line.\u2019 Then I said it again later and he said, \u2018That\u2019s a really good phrase. I wanna use it.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Neil Young - Live at Paramount Theater, Seattle - 1989-02-21\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DfmNBNvRh1g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDays later, on Feb. 21, 1989, Young and the Restless debuted \u201cRockin\u2019 in the Free World\u201d during a show at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. The lyrics are deeply rooted in that exact moment in time, referencing George H.W. Bush\u2019s \u201cthousand points of light\u201d speech at the 1988 Republican National Convention, Jesse Jackson\u2019s \u201cKeep Hope Alive\u201d slogan from his failed attempt to secure the Democratic nomination that year, and Iran\u2019s repeated proclamation in the Eighties that America was the \u201cGreat Satan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut it quickly turned into an all-purpose anthem after appearing on Young\u2019s 1989 LP <em>Freedom.<\/em> Within just a couple of years, everyone from Pearl Jam to Van Halen was playing the song at their shows. Its popularity reached the point this summer that seemingly half the major rock acts on the road added it to their shows all at once \u2014 at a time when we\u2019re once again in conflict with Iran, and American leadership is lacking, to put it mildly. (A very similar thing happened in 2003-04 when the entire rock world <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OIG4VMr4DnA\">simultaneously realized<\/a> that George W. He sings it shit since he\u2019s not a rock singer, really. He\u2019s a kind of\u2026I don\u2019t know what he is. He can work on my farm any time he wants. Anyway, so I thought this could be really good if it had a bit more bite, a bit more anger.\u201d At New York\u2019s Town Hall two days later, he compared Young\u2019s original version to a \u201cwet fart.\u201d Roger, with all due respect, and we say this with a great deal of love, we\u2019re going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there. Perhaps you only listened to the acoustic version that kicks off <em>Freedom<\/em>. Skip ahead to track 12 for the electric one. It\u2019s quite incredible, even if Young\u2019s voice isn\u2019t for everyone. As has been tradition over the past couple of years, he added a \u201cTake America Back!\u201d refrain as a protest against Donald Trump, and wrapped up by ripping all the strings off his guitar. We\u2019re sure even Daltrey would find this one acceptably livid. (Laboriel might be Pearl Jam\u2019s new drummer. He may have merely been guesting with them. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/what-the-hell-pearl-jam-drummer-1235633713\/\">We have no clue what\u2019s going on<\/a>.) It was no great surprise that they played \u201cRockin\u2019 in the Free World\u201d since they\u2019ve done it now 359 times, going all the way back to early 1992, but it was a surprise when they brought out Billy Strings to play it with them. Fifteen years later, it\u2019s as much a part of the Lucinda live experience as \u201cDrunken Angel\u201d or \u201cCar Wheels on a Gravel Road,\u201d and she rarely gets offstage without playing it. When her World\u2019s Gone Wrong tour hit the nation\u2019s capital on Sept. 30, she played an especially pointed rendition. Matthews even added in a new verse that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/neilyoungarchives.com\/news\/rockin-in-the-free-world-at-the-power-to-the-people-concert\/\">a proud Neil Young shared on his website: <\/a>\u201cWe got billionaires\/And the homeless man\/Another school shooting\/We can pray again\/We turn a million trees\/Into toilet paper\/We got Green house gas\/For the ozone layer\/Got a liar and a thief\/Says he\u2019s god\u2019s right hand\/Let the whole world burn\/For the promised land.\u201d (Somehow or another, this was only Springsteen\u2019s second time playing the song. But on the 1993 Right Here Right Now tour, \u201cRockin\u2019 in the Free World\u201d was a regular part of their nightly encore. \u201cThis song tells you the truth,\u201d Hagar told the crowd in Mountain View, California. \u201cThis song gives you an option. That gave Stephen Stills a lot of time to learn it quite well. And when he formed his blues-rock supergroup the Rides with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Barry Goldberg in 2013, \u201cRockin\u2019 in the Free World\u201d was a regular climactic moment in their set. But when he made a surprise appearance with Andrew Watt and Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, New York, on Aug. 20, 2024, he agreed to sing \u201cRockin\u2019 in the Free World\u201d (alongside Charlotte Lawrence), even though he only seemed to know the hook. David Letterman parachuted in to save the day, and it didn\u2019t stop Pearl Jam from bringing out members of Rush, Yes, and Journey for a wild \u201cRockin\u2019 in the Free World\u201d jam at the end of the night. It was a crazy meeting of worlds, and even included the only time in history that two Pearl Jam drummers \u2014 Jack Irons and Matt Cameron \u2014 shared a single kit. Many of the guitarists put down solos, and it was a delight to see Neal Schon get a chance to shred with the cool kids. Things maybe got a little awkward when Eddie Vedder ad-libbed a critical line about \u201cThe Orange Man\u201d while Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain, one of rock\u2019s biggest Trump supporters, played along. But before anyone could even take notice, Trevor \u201cOwner of a Lonely Heart\u201d Rabin ripped into a solo. Everything about this performance is amazingly nuts.
