But hey, if the wrong guy comes along, like he does in the music video for her song \u201c<a data-id=\"1235600035\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/carter-faith-laci-kaye-booth-pearl-handled-pistol-video-1235600035\/\">Pearl Handled Pistol<\/a>\u201d? It\u2019s good to know you\u2019re prepared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve always liked confusing people and making them uncomfortable,\u201d Faith says, tucked in a booth in a black t-shirt, jeans, and her <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spurlette.com\/\">Spurlettos<\/a>, as she\u2019s named them. Faith, alongside her stylist Kennady and creative director Lily, designed them for the video, in which she\u2019s wearing a pair covered in blood near a dead body (we don\u2019t see any actual murdering, but you do the math). The shoes, like Faith\u2019s music, are beautiful, but they\u2019ll cut you if you\u2019re not careful. \u201cI know I\u2019m a blonde Southern girl and I like doing my makeup and stuff,\u201d she says, \u201cbut, deep down, I\u2019m like an angry old man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat slight sense of unease, coupled with Faith\u2019s crystalline country voice and boundary-pushing songwriting, is at the core of her record <em><a data-id=\"1235439243\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/carter-faith-breaks-down-debut-album-cherry-valley-1235439243\/\">Cherry Valley<\/a> <\/em>(and the recent deluxe version, <em>Cherry Valley Forever). <\/em>She\u2019s as much Patsy Cline as she is David Lynch, with songs that aren\u2019t at all afraid to broach taboo topics like mental health, sex, and drugs and pack it all into an imagined concept-album dreamland, wrapping the pain and poison in ribbons and lace. Taking the second spot on <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country-lists\/best-country-music-albums-2025-1235474700\/carter-faith-cherry-valley-2-1235474763\/\">Best Country Albums list<\/a> last year, it\u2019s one of the strongest, most assured debuts the genre has seen of late, earning her an ACM Awards nomination for Album of the Year. The only other debut album to nab the same honors in the past decade was Chris Stapleton, with <em>Traveller. <\/em>Now, she\u2019s a solid contender for a Best Contemporary Country Album nominee at the Grammys, and up for a CMA Award, too.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFaith has been just as busy on the road. In the year that followed the release of <em>Cherry Valley<\/em>, she opened for Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, Shaboozey, and Post Malone. And, next month, she\u2019ll make her acting debut in Netflix\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/netflix-heartland-soundtrack-track-list-1235638654\/\">Heartland<\/a><\/em>, alongside Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Nettles, playing a young country artist who mysteriously disappears. It\u2019s her first on-screen acting role, and her first audition, too. Faith has achieved all of this in a town where the most boundary-pushing, visionary works and artists aren\u2019t always the ones most celebrated on Music Row.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI honestly think that\u2019s one of the most exciting things about Carter and how this music has connected,\u201d says her close friend and producer, Topher Brown, who has seen his share of young artists get distracted by what might work best on social media, or a desire to please the powers that be. \u201cShe is truly writing because she feels what she feels.\u201d Faith describes it, primarily, as her gospel of \u201cno fucks given.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNot giving a fuck is what got Faith to <em>Cherry Valley.<\/em> Born in Davidson, North Carolina, Faith was an anxious, self-described shy kid. \u201cI remember if I had to come late to school because I had to go to the dentist or something, that would be the end of the world for me,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFaith loved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/country-music\/\" id=\"auto-tag_country-music\" data-tag=\"country-music\">country music<\/a> from an early age, thanks to the tapes her grandfather would play in the car. She loved to sing, and taught herself piano and guitar, but being an artist was an unserious job compared to the more practical goals of her classmates, who were often looking toward traditional careers propelled by elite college degrees. She moved to Nashville anyway, enrolling at Belmont University to study songwriting, graduating in 2021. Songs like 2022\u2019s \u201cGreener Pasture\u201d placed her in the \u201cnext big thing\u201d artist category around town. Which is where she stayed for the next few years. He cold-called Faith while she was sitting in a coffee shop to make the ask. \u201cI guess it gave me a sense of validation that someone so cool thought my music was good,\u201d Faith says. \u201cAnd on just a really simple level, it made me feel good and gave me some gumption to keep on, because there\u2019s so many times where you\u2019re like, \u2018Fuck this. I\u2019m going to make like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/feature\/the-secret-life-of-bobbie-gentry-pioneering-artist-behind-ode-to-billie-joe-196953\/\">Bobbie Gentry<\/a> and get out of here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tShe didn\u2019t, though. At least not yet. She and Brown began crafting the songs that would become <em>Cherry Valley<\/em> around 2022, recording two years later. A drive through the town of Cherry Valley, Tennessee, inspired the idea of a concept record, where the songs are part of a visual and sonic world where hearts are broken, people let you down, and sex, drugs, and country music keep you going. Still, they feel achingly personal: \u201cif only I could settle the chemicals running in my brain,\u201d Faith sings on the stunning \u201cIf I Had Never Lost My Mind,\u201d \u201cI could be happy, and you could have stayed.\u201d For Faith, keeping her work so vulnerable, even in the discomfort, is about \u201cnot filtering myself. When she played some folks in Nashville her song \u201cMisery Loves Company,\u201d with the lyric \u201cbirds are circling, something must have died,\u201d they told her it was a little too \u201caggressive,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd my personality is like, \u2018OK, fuck you then! Whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBrown sees Faith\u2019s ability to stay so true to her vision as one of \u201ca million things\u201d that sets her apart. \u201cIt\u2019s her true knowledge of who she is,\u201d the producer says. \u201cA lot of these young artists are so sensitive and impressionable by songwriters that have clout, but Carter\u2019s always known what she wants to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tPart of her vision is that juxtaposition of elements, and leaning into making her audience feel that sense of discomfort. Faith has explored that thoroughly in her music videos, like \u201cBar Star,\u201d where she cozies up to actor Billy Bob Thorton (\u201cbless his liver and his honky-tonk heart,\u201d she sings brilliantly), or \u201cPearl Handled Pistol,\u201d where she possibly commits a murder in those spurred stilettos alongside Laci Kaye Booth and Baby Nova. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDue to some revealing wardrobe choices, the three women got their share of \u201cslut-shaming\u201d comments on social media. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely not going to make me want to cover up, if that was your goal,\u201d Faith says. She points to artists like the Chicks as the epitome of women whose mere existence makes people uncomfortable, and who maybe the industry always wanted to find a way to silence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s kind of happening now, I feel like,\u201d Faith says. \u201cThere are a lot of really successful women, so everyone is like \u2018oh good, this opens up doors for women.\u2019 I don\u2019t really feel like much has changed here. There\u2019s still only a certain amount of spots, and you have to be so much better than a man, obviously. We want to empower our daughters, but not our women.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tShe thinks of another one of her core influences,<a data-id=\"1235512822\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lana-del-rey-release-date-new-stove-single-1235512822\/\"> Lana Del Rey<\/a>, and the arc of her career: especially her first performance on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lana-del-rey-performs-video-games-on-snl-66823\/\">Saturday Night Live<\/a><\/em>, which came with a gleeful handful of ridicule. When Faith appeared on <em>The Tonight Show<\/em> <em>Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/em>, she wore a lace white dress partly inspired by the one Del Rey chose for that infamous appearance. \u201cIt felt like a cornerstone of my life watching pop culture,\u201d she says, seeing an artist she adored torn apart in real time. \u201c[Her performance] was beautiful, and it was real.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carter Faith - Bar Star\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FTGq4amVO4k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFaith, clearly, doesn\u2019t gravitate to artists who mute or censor themselves (tourmate Musgraves is another big inspiration). She, too, wants everyone to feel welcome at her shows \u2014 which is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/rock-the-country-tour-lineup-carter-faith-morgan-wade-leave-1235505404\/\">why she dropped off of<\/a> the lineup for Kid Rock\u2019s Rock the Country Festival. \u201cWhen I looked out at the audience of my last club shows, I could see every type of person,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd that made me feel really good. Because I wrote [these songs] as a white, blonde, straight girl from the south. But you go to different places and there are people who resonate with my story in their life, and that\u2019s really, really cool because music has done that for me. I don\u2019t know if country does that all the time for people.\u201d (She has a name for the kind of country music that exists as light radio fluff, intended to piss off no one: \u201cpander city.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat audience is about to grow exponentially, when <em>Heartland<\/em> begins streaming Nov. 13 on Netflix. Though Faith always loved Broadway and has dreams of playing Roxie Heart in <em>Chicago<\/em>, she wasn\u2019t outwardly looking for film roles. When the script landed on her desk, she figured why not give it a try. \u201cIt would be fun,\u201d Faith thought. \u201cAnd it would make me nervous. I kind of like doing things that make me nervous.\u201d She had a feeling that she landed the job right away, and she was right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFaith didn\u2019t sign up for acting lessons, instead taking the advice from director Shana Feste\u00a0(<em>Country Strong<\/em>), who actually discouraged her from doing so. \u201cShe explained that you have all these colors or tools in your toolbox from your life and your emotional experiences and then you use them to act,\u201d Faith says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe biggest agenda item for Faith right now, though, is finishing her next album, which is about halfway done. The songs from <em>Cherry Valley Deluxe<\/em>, like \u201cPearl Handled Pistol\u201d and the <a data-id=\"1235584911\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/carter-faith-wyatt-flores-duet-cherry-valley-forever-1235584911\/\">Wyatt Flores duet <\/a>\u201cNothin\u2019 Better to Do,\u201d serve almost as a transition point .<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI feel like <em>Cherry Valley<\/em> was very technicolor and candy-coated,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd this is almost like when you\u2019re extremely full glam and it takes like 18 makeup wipes to take it off. This is the first makeup wipe. Taking one layer back.
