90\u2019s Rnb will always be remembered as one of the most beloved decades that the genre has produced. There are a few different variations of r&b that dominated the genre during this period, including Contemporary, New Jack Swing, Hip Hop Soul, and Neo-Soul. The era produced a countless number of timeless hits that are still played to this day, and have gone on to influence most of today\u2019s r&b artists.<\/p>\n
One of the best aspects about the 90\u2019s were the number of dynamic r&b groups that emerged during that time. Although there has been a drought of emerging group\u2019s in more recent years, most of the ones formed in the 90\u2019s continue to live on, tour, and create new quality music. Since most of them have gone on to release music independently these days, it can be a daunting to task to track down your old favorites and keep tabs on what they\u2019ve been up to, even with social media.<\/p>\n
For that reason, we\u2019ve put together a comprehensive list of the most successful 90\u2019s r&b groups, making sure to be all inclusive to just about every act a fan could be wondering about. We also excluded groups who had a bulk of their success in the 80\u2019s, so you won\u2019t see artists like Guy listed. This article was originally published January 2016, and was updated January 2021. Here is the latest known information on each group, what they\u2019ve been up to, and their latest releases. The group eventually reunited and released their return album \u201cQ, Mike, Slim, Daron\u201d in 2017<\/a>. Unfortunately, the group disbanded once again shortly after. Slim and Mike continue to perform under the 112 brand<\/a> and released a new EP in 2020.<\/a> Q. Parker is working on a solo project called \u201cThe Bridge Project\u201d<\/a>. Daron has released various solo albums and singles in recent years<\/a>. You can check out our most recent interview with the group by clicking here.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Known for their biggest hit \u201cI Swear\u201d in 1995, All-4-One has continued releasing albums independently throughout the years. They have plans for a new album called \u201cTwenty+\u201d this year, and released the song \u201cIf We Fall\u201d in 2015<\/a>. We recently spoke to the group<\/a> about 20th Anniversary Plans.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Although they released their first album in 1989, After 7 found most of their success throughout the 90\u2019s with hits like \u201cReady or Not\u201d and \u201cCan\u2019t Stop\u201d. The group featured the siblings of Babyface including Kevon and Melvin Edmonds. The group returned with the new album \u201cTimeless\u201d in 2016<\/a> which brought them a bit of a resurgence. The project featured multiple hit singles including \u201cI Want You\u201d<\/a>, \u201cLet Me Know\u201d<\/a>, and \u201cRunnin Out\u201d<\/a>. Founding member Melvin Edmonds unfortunately passed away in 2019, but his son Jason took his place in the group. In 2021, Jason left the group and was replaced by Danny McClain. The group released their album \u201cUnfinished Business\u201d in 2021.<\/a> In 2023, Danny McClain left the group and was replaced by Wil Robinson.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The group led by Marc Nelson and signed by Babyface to LaFace Records are most known for their hits \u201cLast Night\u201d and cover of Chicago\u2019s \u201cHard to Say I\u2019m Sorry\u201d. They did not release an official album after their self titled debut in 1996, and have gone through numerous lineup changes over the years. The group eventually came back together to release the return album \u201cShe\u2019s Magic\u201d in 2016. The group is currently made up of original members Dion Allen, Kenny Terry, Claude Thomas & Dyshon Benson. As of early 2020, the group was in the studio recording a new album, and preparing for a tour to follow, but neither has come to fruition. We recently spoke to Marc Nelson about the history of the group.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The three member spin off of New Edition containing members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe, their biggest hit was \u201cPoison\u201d and the group last released the album \u201cBBD\u201d in 2001. The group eventually released their latest album \u201cThree Stripes\u201d<\/a> back in 2017. They continue to tour with new Edition but also as BBD when the entire group has taken a break from performing. Check out our recent interview with Ronnie Devoe where we discussed some of the group\u2019s history. <\/a>The group released the new single \u201cAct Like You Know\u201d featuring Run DMC in 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The Teddy Riley formed group Blackstreet became a huge success in the 90\u2019s with hits like \u201cNo Diggity\u201d, \u201cDon\u2019t Leave Me\u201d, and \u201cBefore I Let You Go\u201d, their last official album was \u201cLevel II\u201d in 2003. The group broke up following that, and Teddy Riley eventually started Blackstreet 2 (BS2) which includes himself, Dave Hollister, Lenny Harold, Tony Tyler (who has since passed away) & J-Stylz. BS2 has disbanded in the past few years. Meanwhile, former Blackstreet member Chauncey Hannibal has continued to carry on the original Blackstreet name on his own, touring alongside members Levi Little, Mark Middleton, and Eric Williams. There doesn\u2019t seem to be a reconciliation in sight.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Since becoming arguably the biggest r&b group in the 90\u2019s with hits like \u201cEnd of the Road\u201d, \u201cI\u2019ll Make Love to You\u201d, \u201cOn Bended Knee\u201d and countless others, the group has continued to tour and released albums consistently. Group member Michael McCary has left the group, and original member Marc Nelson has filled in occasionally, but they\u2019ve toured and recorded primarily with three members. The group released their latest album \u201cUnder the Streetlight\u201d in 2017. Meanwhile, member Shawn Stockman released his EP \u201cShawn\u201d back in 2018 <\/a>along with his solo debut album \u201cForeward\u201d in 2020.<\/a> The group released a digital collection in 2023.<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Following five albums throughout the 90\u2019s, Color Me Badd released their final album \u201cAwakening\u201d in 1998. A few of the members have gone on to become record producers behind the scenes in music. We recently interviewed Bryan Abrams from the group to discuss his solo music and the group\u2019s plans. <\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Dru Hill is known as another of the most successful 90\u2019s r&b groups, with hits like \u201cIn My Bed\u201d, \u201cHow Deep is Your Love\u201d and \u201cThese are the Times\u201d. Their lineup still consists of Sisqo, Jazz, and Nokio, but Tao has replaced Woody years ago. They continue to release new music, with their most recent album being \u201cInDRUpendence Day\u201d in 2010. The group has undergone lineup changes in recent years, with Jazz and Tao leaving the group, and Smokey and Black of Playa joining. The group recently released the single \u201cWhat You Need\u201d<\/a> which will be off of their upcoming return album. Meanwhile, Jazz and Tao have each released solo singles in the past couple of years. You can check out our most recent interview with Nokio here<\/a>, and Black here.<\/a> As of 2022, Jazz has returned to the group and is once again touring alongside Sisqo, Nokio, Smokey and Black, along with Tao who has returned to the group. We also recently spoke with Woody Rock for an interview, discussing his time as part of the group\u2019s original lineup. <\/a>During 2023, the group performed with SWV and Jodeci on the Summer Block Party tour.<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n With their biggest hit \u201cKnockin Da Boots\u201d, H-Town found plenty of success in the 90\u2019s, releasing three albums. They suffered a major setback when lead singer Dino was killed in 2003, and released the album \u201cImitations of Life\u201d the following year. Surviving members Solomon \u201cShazam\u201d Conner and Darryl \u201cG.I.\u201d Jackson have gone on to record new music sporadically, with the new album \u201cChild Support\u201d released in late 2014. The group released their latest single \u201cGreen Light 713\u201d in 2020.\u00a0<\/a>They teamed up with Hi-Five for the new single \u201cSlow Grind\u201d in 2024.<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Group Hi-Five achieved stardom in 1990 following their New Jack Swing smash hit \u201cI Like the Way (The Kissing Game)\u201d. After three albums, the group disbanded in 1993, and also suffered the loss of lead singer Tony Thompson who died in 2007. The group released a new EP in 2014, and they continue to tour and keep the Hi-Five legacy alive<\/a>. You can check out our most recent interview with Treston Irby of the group here.\u00a0<\/a>They teamed up with H-Town for the new single \u201cSlow Grind\u201d in 2024.<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Child stars Immature, lead by Marques Houston, found success throughout the 90\u2019s before disbanding when Marques went on to pursue a solo career in 2001. However, they reunited in 2015 with the original lineup to release the new EP \u201cRemember\u201d<\/a> which contained reworked versions of their original songs. Marques Houston also continues to record as a solo artist, putting out the album \u201cFamous\u201d in 2013<\/a>. The group most recently made another comeback with the announcement they\u2019d be headlining the nationwide \u201cTBT: The Reunion\u201d tour<\/a>. Marques Houston released his new album \u201cThe Best Worst Year Ever\u201d<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n R&B group Ideal released their self titled Gold certified album in 1999, which featured the hits \u201cGet Gone\u201d and \u201cWhatever\u201d with Lil\u2019 Mo. That was the only official release the group would have, and there hasn\u2019t been much on them since. Group member Maverick Cotton has gone on to write songs for other artists.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Despite not releasing a new album since \u201cNew Life\u201d in 1995 and losing lead singer Kenny Greene to AIDS in 2001, the group has remained active. They\u2019ve added a new member and continued touring, and most recently released the new single \u201cLose Control\u201d in 2015<\/a>. The surviving group members were featured on Eric Roberson\u2019s 2022 single \u201cAll I Want\u201d<\/a> which featured the vocals of late Kenny Greene.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Jagged Edge continue to release new music and tour as a group. They released the new album album \u201cJE Heartbreak II\u201d in 2014<\/a>, followed by \u201cLayover\u201d in 2017<\/a>. The group released their double album \u201cA Jagged Love Story\u201d in 2020<\/a>. Check out our recent interview with the group here.\u00a0In 2023, the group <\/a>released a cover of \u201cHeaven Help Me\u201d<\/a> originally recorded by Deon Estus.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Legendary r&b group Jodeci had a big return in 2015, releasing their first new album in 20 years with \u201cThe Past, The Present, The Future\u201d<\/a>. Their was mixed response to the album<\/a>, but it did not hurt their legacy one bit. We recently spoke to Mr. Dalvin about DeVante and the group\u2019s legacy for an interview.\u00a0<\/a>The group joined New Edition and Charlie Wilson for \u201cThe Culture Tour\u201d in 2022,<\/a> and performed as part of the Summer Block Party tour in 2023 with SWV and Dru Hill.<\/a> The group has also announced a Las Vegas Residency for 2024.<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The original Jodeci members reunited with the group in 2014 to record the new album \u201cThe Past, The Present, the Future\u201d. Prior to that, they\u2019ve continued to do shows across the globe performing their hits like \u201cTell Me It\u2019s Real\u201d, \u201cAll My Life\u201d, and \u201cCrazy\u201d. Their last album was \u201cMy Brother\u2019s Keeper\u201d<\/a> in 2013 and featured the single \u201cKnock it Off\u201d<\/a>. More recently, each of the members has decided to go solo<\/a> and were working towards the release of individual albums. As of 2022, each member had put the projects on hold in order to tour as part of Jodeci.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The premiere band in r&b, Mint Condition have continued touring and releasing new music since their debut album \u201cMeant to be Mint\u201d in 1991. Their most recent album was \u201cMusic @ the Speed of Life\u201d in 2012<\/a>. Most recently, lead singer Stokley Williams has gone off to pursue a solo career. He released his debut album \u201cIntroducing Stokley\u201d in 2017<\/a>, and released his sophomore album \u201cSankofa\u201d in 2021<\/a>. He does not appear to have been performing with the group in the meantime. Check out our most recent interview with Stokley.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Next became one of the most successful r&b groups of the 90\u2019s after releasing crossover hits like \u201cToo Close\u201d and \u201cWifey\u201d. They released their final album \u201cThe Next Episode\u201d in 2002, and continued to tour as a group, but have broken up in recent years. RL has gone on to have a solo career and has written many hits for other artists<\/a>, but T-Low and Tweety had continued touring as Next. The group has eventually come back together and released the new single \u201cWant It\u201d in 2018<\/a>. Next continues to tour together with all three original members. In 2023, the group teamed up with Naughty by Nature to form the group Next by Nature and release the single \u201cThat\u2019s Me\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Playa were an r&b group signed to Def Jam and had the smash hit \u201cCheers 2 U\u201d from their debut album produced by Timbaland. After their sophomore album \u201cThrowback Legendz\u201d was shelved, members Digital Black and Smoke E. Digglera would go on to do solo albums, while Static Major wrote hits for the likes of Aaliyah, Ginuwine and Lil\u2019 Wayne. He passed away in 2008 before his debut solo album \u201cSupper Time\u201d released. Both surviving members of the group have gone on to join Dru Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The group found their biggest success in the early 90\u2019s during the New Jack Swing era fueled by their hit single \u201cHere We Go Again!\u201d The group most recently returned with a new album in 2020 called \u201cAfro Trees\u201d.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Emerging out of Motown Records in the late 90\u2019s, the group found success with their hit song \u201cLiar\u201d from their second album \u201cNothin but Drama\u201d, and released an independent self titled album in 2004, but went quiet after that. In 2014 they had planned a new album<\/a> and also released a new single \u201cI\u2019m in Love\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n After teaming up with R. Kelly for his debut album \u201cBorn into the 90\u2019s\u201d, the group released a few albums and experienced a some lineup changes through the years. Most recently, an independent album called \u201cContinuation\u201d was supposed to release, but nothing has come to fruition.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The R&B duo made up of Dante \u201cChi\u201d Jordan and David \u201cDavinch\u201d Chance originally made a name for themselves with hits like \u201cNo More\u201d and \u201cSomeone to Love You\u201d. Things went silent following the group\u2019s third album \u201cThe Final Chapter\u201d in 2010. However, the pair have reunited in recent years performing shows and even releasing the comeback album \u201cSoul Brothers\u201d in 2018<\/a>. They released their latest album \u201cRebirth\u201d in 2021.<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Shai had their biggest hit in 1992 with the hit single \u201cIf I Ever Fall in Love\u201d. They haven\u2019t released an album since \u201cBack From The Mystery System: The Love Cycle\u201d in 2004, but they continue to tour as a group<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Silk became known throughout the 90\u2019s as one of the premiere r&b groups, and found their biggest success with the song \u201cFreak Me\u201d. They last released the album \u201cAlways & Forever\u201d in 2006, but recently announced their comeback<\/a> with the new single \u201cLove 4 U 2 Like Me\u201d and released the album \u201cQuiet Storm\u201d in 2016<\/a>. Check out our recent interview with John John from the group about their history and future.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Following their Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis produced self titled debut in 1995, Solo would release one other album before going quiet. They returned with their latest album \u201c3.0 Rebooted\u201d in 2015.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The group became known in the 90\u2019s for their hit song \u201cMy Love is the Shhh!\u201d but haven\u2019t released anything since their third album \u201cIssues\u201d in 2000. Members of the group have been successful songwriters, penning songs for the likes of Brandy, Will Smith, En Vogue and Adina Howard.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n R&B group Soul for Real became known for their hits \u201cCandy Rain\u201d and \u201cEvery Little Thing I Do\u201d. Following their third album \u201cHeat\u201d in 1999, they\u2019ve gone pretty quiet. We sat down with the group a few years back<\/a> and they discussed their plans for a return to music. They made a return to music with the new single \u201cLove Again\u201d in 2017<\/a>. Since then, group member Jase has gone on to release solo music<\/a>. The group released a new single called \u201cAfter the Rain\u201d in 2021.<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The Raphael Saadiq led group released their first album in the 80\u2019s, but found their greatest success throughout the 90\u2019s. Hits like \u201cFeels Good\u201d, \u201cWhatever You Want\u201d and \u201cAnniversary\u201d led to multiple platinum albums. After Saadiq left the group to pursue a solo career including forming Lucy Pearl and many hit albums of his own, the group would still go on to tour without him but haven\u2019t released a new album. In 2023, all three original members reunited for the reunion \u201cJust Me and You\u201d tour.<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Troop actually released two albums in the 80\u2019s, but their biggest hits came in the early 90\u2019s. They found success with songs like \u201cSpread My Wings\u201d and \u201cAll I Do is Think of You\u201d as well as \u201cSweet November\u201d. Member Steve Russell has had success as a writer, working with The Underdogs, and has also released solo music.
