With the help of Adam Levine, the Duchess of Sussex got the “Birds of a Feather” singer to send signed gifts to a heartbroken fan
The L.A. fires destroyed at least 16,000 structures, and with them, one teen’s most prized possession — a Billie Eilish T-shirt she had gotten at the superstar’s concert shortly before. However, thanks to Meghan Markle’s quick thinking (and a text to Maroon 5’s Adam Levine and his wife, model Behati Prinsloo) the 15-year-old now has a box full of signed merchandise from Eilish herself.
On Feb. 4, Markle posted a selfie video of the unboxed goods to Instagram. “I was just told that something arrived that I have been waiting for,” she said. “Oh my God,” she exclaimed as she looked at a big pile of Eilish merch, including clothing and a signed Hit Me Hard and Soft vinyl on a tabletop. She was excited but also a bit perplexed by a tin lunch box in the kit, likely an ode to the single “Lunch.” “Is that a thing?” Markle asked. “A lunch box thing?”
Here’s how it happened, as Markle explains it: A few weeks ago, she and her husband Prince Harry visited an Altadena neighborhood decimated in the fires. While there, they spoke to a mom who was surveying the rubble of her home for the first time for any relics that might have remained. The woman’s daughter most wanted to recover the T-shirt she recently got from an Eilish concert, one she believed she left in the washer or dryer. Both machines. “And of course they now see their home and the washing machine [and] the dryer are ash… they’re not there anymore,” said Markle. Markle promised that, somehow, she would have the shirt replaced, though she didn’t know Eilish personally. But as many people who work in any specialized industry (like entertainment) might know, these worlds can be quite small. Markle sent a voice note meant for Eilish to her contacts that she thought might relay the message. Levine and Prinsloo were the ones to get the ask “over the line,” she explained.
She sent them a big thank you at the video’s end. “This is going to mean so much to her,” Markle said. “To everyone who is showing up for people in big and small ways to get through what’s happened in California, just thank you so much. I’m going to go and email her mom now. Just wanted to share that with you guys.”
On Sunday, Eilish and her brother and collaborator Finneas performed at the 67th Grammy Awards, where they paid tribute to their hometown of L.A. Their set placed them in the heart of Altadena’s San Gabriel Mountains and Eaton Canyon, where they spent time hiking and playing with their dogs as they grew up. The pair also performed at the recent FireAid benefit concert at the Crytpo.com Arena. Markle was born and raised in Los Angeles as well.
