After spending the last couple of years on the road commemorating their 2003 album Transatlanticism, Death Cab for Cutie have announced a four-gig run celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 2005 album, Plans.
The short trek will kick off Aug. 2 with a hometown show at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, followed by an Aug. 5 gig at the Chicago Theatre. After that, Death Cab will play two nights at the Brooklyn Paramount, Aug. 8 and 10. Nation of Language will provide support during the Seattle and Chicago gigs, while the American Analog Set will be on hand for the two Brooklyn shows.
Tickets for all shows will go on sale Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. local time for Seattle and Brooklyn and 9 a.m. CT for Chicago. A presale will start Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. local time, with registration open now. Full info is available on Death Cab’s website.
Death Cab for Cutie released Plans in August 2005, two years after the breakthrough success of Transatlanticism. The album marked the group’s major label debut and featured a handful of successful singles, including “Soul Meets Body,” “Crooked Teeth,” and “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.”
Speaking with Rolling Stone ahead of the album’s original release, Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard said the title Plans came from his favorite joke: “How do you make God laugh? Make a plan.”
Gibbard went on to explain, “I was telling myself, ‘I’m going to stop writing depressing songs. This record’s going to be really upbeat. Like, ‘I Will Follow You Into the Dark’ is a love song I wrote for my lady, really sweet and romantic. It’s about someone dying, and the person they love saying, ‘I’m close behind, I’ll follow you into the dark.’ But then I played it for her and she was like, ‘This song is fucking sad!’ Best to run with what comes naturally. I tried.”
