The Mexican legend repurposed choreography to “El Celoso” to fit Kendrick Lamar’s chart-topper
It’s not every day that your tío’s carne asada playlist and your own rap faves collide. On Monday, Mexican star Marco Antonio Solís shared a video that shows him dancing along to a mash-up of Los Bukis’ “El Celoso” with Kendrick Lamar‘s “Not Like Us.”
“¡Mira, mira!” Solís says in the video as he follows his dancers’ choreography to the 1992 song before “Not Like Us” comes in, evoking a roar from the crowd. Solís then launched into the viral TikTok dance trend inspired by Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show performance earlier this month.
In the clip, Solís turns around and shakes it as Lamar’s verse “Wop, wop, wop, wop, wop/Dot, fuck ’em up ” plays in the background.
While Solís dancing to Lamar’s “Not Like Us” might come as a surprise to many, the rapper’s November album GNX has hints of Mexican spread throughout. Lamar hand-selected mariachi singer Deyra Barrera to join him on songs like “Wacced Out Murals,” “Reincarnated,” and “Gloria” with SZA, all from the LP.
“I had no idea what I would record. I make mariachi, not rap,” Barrera told Rolling Stone after the album dropped. “They told me they wanted my style, my voice. I had no idea how it was going to end up on the record.”
Solis is currently on his Eternanmente Agradecido Tour in South America, with stops in Mexico in May, and an appearance at La Onda Festival in Napa, California on May 31. Lamar, too, is set to hit the road with his Grand National Stadium Tour in April.
