Nicky Jam has released his first project since facing stark backlash for his (withdrawn) endorsement of Donald Trump. On Friday, the reggaeton artist dropped the eight-track EP, Sunshine, including collaborations with Geo and 4Rain.
“This album is incredibly special to me because it represents a new stage in my artistic and personal life,” Jam said in a press release. “With Sunshine, I want to connect with my audience in a different way, showcasing an evolution not only in my music but also in my story.”
Jam worked on the EP with Jorge “Milliano” Erazo and Alejandro Patiño. The singer opts for strict perreo on “Dile a Él,” dabbles with funk on “Mine,” and sings over corrido-ish strums before a reggaeton beat on “Moncler.” Sunshine marks his first release under Virgin Music Group, which Jam lauded for giving him “the creative freedom I needed to take my vision to the next level.”
The new EP comes days after he spoke to Billboard about Trump misgendering him and saying “she’s hot” during a campaign in Las Vegas. In the interview, the musician said the incident happened after Nicky and his wife met Trump backstage. “It’s flattering to have the president tell my wife that she’s hot,” he told the outlet. “But when I met him, in his mind she was Nicky Jam… What does he know about Nicky Jam? He doesn’t listen to reggaetón.” (Jam later walked back his endorsement after a Trump comedian called Puerto Rico a “pile of garbage.”)
Sunshine follows 2024’s Insomnio, which featured “Cansándote” with Sean Paul, “Chicokis” Ryan Castro, and “69” with Feid.
