Davido Reminisces on ‘5ive’ Single ‘Be There Still’

Davido’s latest track sees him grateful for his success as his fifth album approaches

Afrobeats star Davido is celebrating his reign as one of Nigeria’s leading pop acts with “Be There Still,” the latest single from his forthcoming album 5ive. “I want to have it all/Still dey find my resolve,” he sings over a rattling shakers, scattered log drumming, and bassy synths. The song was co-produced by South African hitmaker DJ Maphorisa.  “Na God dey bless me all the way/12 years, I’m still on top.”

“This one is for my Day 1s,” Davido said in a press release. “‘Be There Still’ is all about perseverance, and the journey. It’s a sound my fans know and love. I’m excited the world finally gets to hear it.”

Last October, Davido released 5ive’s first single “Awuke,” featuring YG Marley, son of Miss Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley, and grandson to Bob Marley. In December, Davido dropped “Funds,” with rising acts Odumodublvck and Chike. “Funds” samples late South African singer Brenda Fassie’s 1997 classic, “Vuli Ndlela,” a popular hit across the African diaspora.

“‘Funds’ is a celebration of the hustle and the journey,” Davido exclusively told Rolling Stone in a statement ahead of the track. “It’s a vibe that resonates across cultures. And with 5ive on the way, I’m bringing that same energy – African pride, global sound. We’re just getting started.”

In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Davido emphasized the importance of prioritizing his African audience. “I always tell artists, ‘Always have that home love first. Then, you could take over the world.’” he said. Since the Grammys introduced a Best African Music Performance awards in 2023, Davido has been nominated both times, in 2023 for “Unavailable,” and last year for “Sensational” with Chris Brown.
