Gatlin Drops ‘Eldest Daughter’ Singels ‘Happy,’ ‘Pipe Dream’: Listen

Gatlin once joked that she “owed her life” to Taylor Swift for several reasons — and now she has two more Swiftie coincidences to add to the list. On Wednesday night, as she dropped her singles “Happy” and “Pipe Dream,” Gatlin celebrated the fact that her upcoming debut album, The Eldest Daughter, shares its title with a song on Swift’s newly announced record.

“This cannot be made up!!” Gatlin wrote on TikTok, reacting to the news, also celebrating that Swift is dropping her album The Life of a Showgirl on Oct. 3, the same release date of her own debut album. “Girl we have the same brain!”

The Swift announcement Wednesday night came as she released a pair of songs from the upcoming record. Gatlin’s song “Pipe Dream,” which she self-produced and wrote, about “comparing everything” to the success of her biggest track, “What If I Love You,” which has generated more than 85 million streams on Spotify.

“Nothing was even coming close to touching it, and my value and worth as a creative was very tied up in that,” she said in a press statement about “Pipe Dream.” “It’s a song where I’m just looking at my life and realizing I’ve put all my eggs in this music basket… and what happens if all of this doesn’t work out.”

Gatlin’s other song “Happy” is about her struggle with depression and some of the “peak delusion” thoughts she’d have: “I would sometimes daydream about ending up in the hospital so then this guy I liked would come visit me and realize he was desperately in love with me – and also would remember to text me back,” she said of the track.

Ahead of The Eldest Daughter‘s release on Oct. 3, the singer will throw an album preview party in Los Angeles on Sept. 17 to play songs from the album for the first time. She’ll also perform in Orlando, DC, Brooklyn, and Boston through mid-October.
